first - tried to recreate life in home country, followed same language and cultures, spoke same foreign language, foreign newspapers, immigrant neighborhoods of same country. second - children of immigrants, public schools teaching about government and society, social interaction in public schools, being accustomed to American culture, "succeeded in crossing bridge to American side", could speak and write english third - comfortable amreican, few knew their native language, few lived in old ways in old country, no immigrant neighborhoods of same country, moved away from old immigrant neighboorhoods.

skilled workers- lived in cities where their skill was in most demand for more money. they were prosperous. Lives Of people without skill in middle class- had money to buy farmland because they sold their old houses+ property. Later, they settled in cities. Poor Workers without a skill - after coming into the US, there was no one to teach them a skill and they needed to find a job quickly to raise a family or provide food for themselves. They usually got the low-payed jobs like sweeping or being a servant.

What were urban immigrant neighborhoods like?

Six people had to fit themselves inside a huge closet. The tenements always were leaking and the floors were always wet. One family lived in 1-2 rooms, and many buildings were falling apart from neglect. They lived on top of a stable where the owner's horses were kept. There were 70 people in one apartment building. Life was very uncomfortable. The neighboorhoods usually had everyone from country.

Why did nativists not like immigrants?

immigrants could "revolt" the culture, thought immigrants would change America for the worse, thought might be religious arguments, they thought they might revolt against the democratic government. before civil war, nativists were most afraid of the immigrants' impact on the supremacy of Protestantism. feared that immigrants will accept low wages and throw the "native people" out of work.

evening school for Irish to change into American. There were English classes. There were also Americanization programs such as pamphlets and public schools to teach about the society of the U.S. The public schools allowed interaction which made the immigrants more American.
