The opium wars were fought between china and the British since the chinese were mad at the british for infecting the land. China lost both wars and was weakened as a result. Other world powers tried to get a piece of it after the wars. It ended due to the treaty of nanking which established the fact of trade between china and England. China also had to pay for the destroyed opium.
