Describe the Panama Canal opening.
The USA wanted to build a canal in central America so that ships didn't have to sail all the way around South America if they wanted to deliver goods from NY to CA. We found the thinnest spot in Central America, and it was in Columbia. Columbia didn't want us to build a canal in their territory, but there was one section of land that did. These people were called Panamanians. They Panamanians had to declare independence from Columbia before we could build the Panama Canal.
