No time for exercise?  How about doing stretches while taking a shower.  When you're standing in line at the grocery store, you can flex your abs or clench your rear.  You could even do calf raises while talking on the phone.  During lunch breaks, walk around the building.  Have a choice between the stairs and an elevator?  Take the stairs!

Exercise can be easily worked into one’s daily routine.

Many people use the words cyborg and android interchangeably, but these words have different meanings. Both refer to beings powered by robotics, but an android is powered entirely by machinery. Cyborgs are partly powered by a living organism. They also look different. Androids may be completely mechanical, but they are designed to look like humans. They may have synthetic skin, hair, and other human-like features. Cyborgs are usually designed in a way that accents their robotic modifications. A cyborg's mechanically enhanced eye may cast a red light or have a chrome plate surrounding it, for instance.

Comparing and contrasting cyborgs and androids.

Counterfeiting is the act of making phony money that looks official. Want to make sure your money is real? The first and most telling inspection is to pay attention to how the money feels. It is difficult to reproduce the texture of real money. If the money feels suspicious, look carefully at the microprinting on the bill. Many features along the portrait and border of a genuine bill contain writing that is too small to reproduce in most printers. If you still aren't sure, hold the bill up to the light and look for the strip that says the value of the bill.

How to tell if money is fake.

Many reality shows occur in unreal environments, like rented mansions occupied by film crews. These living environments do not reflect what most people understand to be "reality." Worse, there have been accusations that events not captured on film were later re-staged by producers. Worse still, some involved in the production of "reality" television claim that the participants were urged to act out story lines premeditated by producers.

Reality television isn't always real.

The platypus is one of a few venomous mammals. Male platypus carry a venom cocktail in their ankle spurs. This venom incapacitates victims with excruciating pain. Stranger still, the platypus is the only mammal that uses electroreception. That means that the platypus uses its bill to sense the electricity produced by the muscular movements of its prey. Electroreception is a sixth sense different from seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, or feeling. Perhaps most odd, the platypus is the only mammal that lays eggs rather than giving birth to live young.

The strange and unique attributes of the platypus.

Feeling stressed?  Have you ever tried self-hypnosis?  It may help you de-stress.  Another relaxation technique is the “relaxation response.” In this technique, one learns how to quiet the body and mind. Still another way to manage stress is progressive muscular relaxation. This is a procedure in which muscles are contracted and relaxed systematically. Other techniques to help you manage your stress include yoga, quieting, and diaphragmatic breathing.

There are a number of stress management techniques.

Smoking has been proven dangerous to people's health.  Why then do people continue to smoke?  For young people, smoking often represents maturity and individuality. Others smoke as a way to reduce tension. In addition, the regular smoker becomes addicted psychologically and physically to the nicotine in cigarettes.

Although smoking is dangerous, people continue doing it for various reasons.

The term “killer bees” refers to a group of aggressive bees that escaped from an experiment in Brazil in 1957. They have migrated at a rate of 100-200 miles per year and have arrived in the United States. There have been reports that killer bees are larger than the European honeybees we have grown accustomed to in the United States. In truth, they are a little smaller. Some people who have been stung have said that killer bees have stung them repeatedly. They are incapable of stinging more than once, as they lose their stinger with the first sting. Some have claimed that the venom of the killer bee is stronger than other bees. Actually, it is the same strength as other honeybees. Also some other people have claimed that they were “hunted” by killer bees; these bees, however, do not hunt. However, they are more easily provoked than other bees, and when they become irritated, they sting in groups, often chasing their victim.

There are several misconceptions about killer bees.

Fifty years ago, Americans were sleeping an average of eight to twelve hours a night.  However, by 1990, they were down to only seven hours a night. Now many Americans average only about six hours of sleep a night. Extensive research shows that losing an hour or two of sleep every night, week after week, month after month, makes it more difficult for people to pay attention (especially to monotonous tasks) and to remember things. Reaction time also slows down, behavior becomes unpredictable, logical reasoning is impaired, and accidents and errors in judgment increase.  Additionally, productivity and the ability to make decisions declines. Students fall asleep in class and fail to learn all that they should when they haven't gotten enough sleep. Marriages become more stressful as sleep-exhausted parents try to cope with their children and each other. Truck and auto drivers fall asleep at the wheel, and experts estimate that accidents result in over 1,500 deaths in this country a year.

Loss of sleep has caused serious problems.

All people have a strong need to belong to groups. Some people like the feeling of protection a group can offer.  Others feel a greater sense of personal and social identity. Moreover, people join specific groups in order to accomplish things that they cannot accomplish as individuals. Neither symphonies nor football games can be played by one person alone, and many types of work require team effort. Further, people join groups because of the social status and identity that they offer. An important part of people’s feelings of self-worth comes from their identification with particular groups. Even a relatively low-status group can be a source of pride for individuals who are held in high esteem within the group; being big fish in small ponds can make people feel good about themselves, particularly people from individualist cultures. Finally, people may join groups simply because they like the members and want to have the opportunity to interact with them.

People join groups for different reasons.

Costs were low that year, and output was the highest it had ever been. There was a good person for each job, and the market remained firm. There were no losses from fire or other natural disasters, like in past years.

It was one of the best years in the history of the company.

Brand names are common household words. Instead of grabbing a "tissue," we use a "Kleenex."  We start each day using the toothpaste, soap, and breakfast foods promoted by advertisers. Ads have made the cars we drive signs of our success. Our choices of food, dress, and entertainment are swayed by ads.

Advertising affects our lives everyday.

Penicillin has saved thousands of lives already and will save many more in the future.  It can help people with bacterial infections, but also those with other medical conditions, like Lyme disease.  Since the cost of Penicillin is so low, it's able to help communities across the world, regardless of their wealth.

Penicillin is a very helpful prescription drug.

The Louisiana Purchase doubled the area of the country and provided territory from which fourteen new states were created either wholly or in part. It also gave us control over the mouth of the Mississippi River and opened up the way to foreign trade. Prior to the purchase, the waterway had been blocked by the Spanish.  The land that was bought was rich in timber, minerals, and natural resources of many kinds.

The Louisiana Purchase was one of the most important business decisions in the history of the United States.

The United States calls its basic unit of currency the “dollar”.  Australia and New Zealand also measure their currency by “dollars”.  In Great Britain, money is called the “pound”.  Korea uses the “won”.  If you're in Russia, you spend “rubles”.  Mexico and the Philippines use a “peso”.   The country of Zaire, in Africa, calls its money unit a “Zaire”.

Different countries have different names for currency.

The attitudes of Americans toward gambling are amazingly contradictory. You may find, for example, that betting on racing is legal in your state, but that you cannot legally play poker for money on your front porch.  Bookies, or people who collect money when people bet, may be prosecuted by state law, but they are also supposed to purchase a federal license nonetheless.  One church condemns gambling, while another raises money by sponsoring Bingo games.

Gambling laws are inconsistent from community to community.

Some people believe if a woman lifts weights, she will develop muscles as large as a man’s. Without extra male hormones, however, a woman cannot increase her muscle bulk as much as a man’s. Another misconception about exercise is that it increases the appetite. Actually, regular exercise stabilizes the blood-sugar level, which prevents hunger pains. Some people also think that a few minutes of exercise a day or one session is enough, but at least three solid workouts a week are needed for muscular and cardiovascular health.

There are many myths about exercise.

To help someone who is dealing with a loss, friends and family should try not to make demands on the grieving individual. Instead, they should allow the person time to mourn. The struggling individual can also be helped by assisting them with daily household chores. It is also helpful to talk with the bereaved person about the deceased and to express one’s own feelings of sadness and loss, but without pity. Friends and family can additionally help the bereaved by keeping regular contact with them, inviting them to dinner or to movies or just offering a friendly call or a visit.

Friends and family can do a variety of things to help someone cope with grief.

Birds that roost in communities keep warmer and save more energy than those who roost separately. If a bird is part of a flock, it is more likely to find food and detect danger than a solitary bird—several pairs of eyes are better than one. In addition, birds that eat on the ground with other birds can more easily escape attack because at least one member of the flock will alert the others. Then, when all the birds fly upward to escape together, they cause confusion, turning a predator’s interest away from any one individual. Several small birds may even act together to “mob” a larger intruder and drive it away.

There are several advantages for birds to stay together in flocks rather than live separately.

A study at one prison showed that owning a pet can change a hardened prison inmate into a more caring person. Another study discovered that senior citizens, both those living alone and those in nursing homes, became more interested in life when they were given pets to care for. Even emotionally disturbed children have been observed to smile and react with interest if there is a cuddly kitten or puppy to hold.

Animals can be a means of therapy for many kinds of individuals.

There is a common belief that while the dog is man’s best friend, the coyote is his worst enemy. The bad reputation of the coyote traces back to his fondness for small animals; they hunt at night and is particularly destructive to sheep, young pigs, and poultry. However, it is sometimes wise to encourage coyotes. Provided valuable farm animals are protected, the coyote will often free the property of other animals, like rabbits, which ruin crops and certain trees. They are especially beneficial in keeping down the rodent population. Where coyotes have been allowed to do their work, ranchers and fruit growers have found them valuable.

Under certain conditions the coyote is helpful to man.

We’re often told “He who hesitates is lost,” but we’re also warned to “look before you leap.” Most of us have heard the saying, “Out of sight, out of mind,” but then we hear “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” Everyone talks about “love at first sight,” but then someone reminds us, “Marry in haste, repent at leisure.”

There are many sayings in our culture that contradict one another or are very confusing.

Always warm up before attempting any strength training exercises. Failure to warm up can cause injuries to cold muscles. Remember to use proper lifting procedures for safety's sake. In addition, to avoid harm, make sure that you have a spotter with you if you are using free weights. You can also avoid injury by working within your limits and avoiding the need to show off.

To avoid injury during strength or weight training, observe several safety precautions.

Unlike people in the United States, who believe that different individuals have different abilities, the Japanese believe that all students are born with pretty much the same ability.  Any differences in academic performance, they believe result from differences in effort.  and that differences in academic performance must be due to differences in effort.  Before most Japanese children even enroll in school, their parents—usually their mothers—have taught them numbers, the alphabet, and some art skills. By age four, more than 90% of Japanese children are attending preschool in order to receive a head start on their education. The typical Japanese student spends six to seven hours a day in school, five full days a week and a half-day on Sunday.

The key to superior performance is hard work beginning at an early age.

The very name of our country, the United States of America, suggests both unity ("United") and division ("States"). To the modern citizen, it is the unity that counts. Americans generally think of themselves living in one country. However, there was a time when many Americans thought differently. In 1774 when John Adams spoke of "our country," he meant Massachusetts. Even Thomas Jefferson took a while to move beyond his own region of birth and in his early years, "my country" usually meant Virginia to him. Although Oliver Ellsworth participated in 1787 in making plans for a federal government that would have power over the entire country, it was his home state of Connecticut that inspired the strongest patriotic feeling.

Early in the history of the United States, many Americans were more devoted to their home states than the idea of a common country.
