How much homework can I expect my child to have each night?
This will depend on the night- some homework will be consistent each day/week, some nights may require work on long-term projects, and some nights may be homework-free! Written homework should never take more than 35 minutes. Nightly reading and math fact practice will be required.

How will I know what my child is doing in school?
Ask your child questions! Make sure to refer to Miss Clark’s Weekly Parent Letter, and check the class website for more information.

Which color socks and shoes can my child wear?
Clean, black or white tennis shoes and socks are allowed. Other colors and styles should be saved for free dress days.

Is my student required to eat snack in the morning?
Students should eat a protein-filled breakfast, and should have a healthy snack to eat at 9:50 in order to keep their brains alert through morning classes!

Check agendas for daily behavior. Grades will be posted throughout the school year on Gradelink. Checking this resource frequently is a great way to see student progress!

What should I do to keep track of my child’s uniform items?
Label the tags of all items!

Is there anything I should know about lunch at St. Mark?
Students should bring healthy (colorful!) lunches, or should purchase appropriately sized lunches from the school lunch program. Talk to your child about the content and amount of food that they have each day to ensure nutrition and reduce waste!

How will my child’s birthday be celebrated?
A small birthday celebration will be done in the classroom. Parents may also coordinate with Miss Clark ahead of time to bring in a healthy birthday treat during lunch (or at the end of the day on Fridays). All details regarding treats should be communicated prior to the birthday day.

Will late homework be accepted?
Homework that is turned in late will lose 1 point, unless previously discussed with the teacher. Long-term projects should not be late- Miss Clark will work with students to ensure preparedness.

What is the best way to contact Miss Clark?
Email and notes in agendas are quick, easy ways to communicate. Miss Clark is also happy to set up parent-teacher meetings.

Where should I look if I have more uniform questions?

Can my drink anything during the day?
Plain water is allowed and encouraged at the students’ desks during the day. Other healthy, non-sugary beverages are not allowed in the classroom, but can be brought to snack/lunch.

Why should I be Virtus trained and fingerprinted?
Virtus training and fingerprinting are required in order for parents to work directly with students throughout the year (volunteering in the school, chaperoning field trips, etc.)

How should my child practice math facts at home?
Memorization of math facts is important in building quick recall of facts in order to spend most energy focusing on problem solving and critical thinking strategies. Students are encouraged to find a routine time each night or morning to practice. Flash cards, iPad/computer games, worksheets, and other forms of practice are acceptable.

What do I do if I want to come into my child’s classroom?
Please contact Miss Clark ahead of time for various scheduled events. Visitors must sign in at the Office.

Throughout the year, Miss Clark will communicate different genres, themes, and reading skills that the students should be focusing on during their nightly reading. Please ensure that your child is reading chapter books that both interest and challenge them. Please contact Miss Clark for book or resource suggestions.

Much of the information can be found in the student agenda. It may also be helpful to keep track of this information at home, and contact Miss Clark or the school office for help!

What should I encourage my child to do with his/her trash after snack/lunch? St. Mark is going green! All trash and recycling should be put in appropriate bins. Practice this at home, at the park, and wherever else you may be to help our efforts to help the planet!

What should I know about third grade field trips?
We hope to go on about one field trip per trimester to a location that allows content from the classroom to be brought to life! Miss Clark will keep you up-to-date regarding chaperones, fees, dress code, etc. for these events. She is also always open to new ideas!
