Because open breaking of the laws shows disrespect for the laws. And when everyone disrespects the laws, then it is obvious that it shouldn't be apart of the Constitution. So to some, speakeasies helped amend the Constitution.

Because it is a lot harder to solve a drinking problem when you get arrested if you do. Both occasional drinkers and drunks were lumped into the same category. You couldn't even go to your pastor or counselor for help, you might end up in jail.
