You’re in a large crowd in a stadium. The lights go down and the announcer says, “Please welcome to the stage the band with the number-one song in the nation.”
A concert is about to begin.
The coach of the basketball team stops you in the hallway one afternoon. He says, “I was watching you out there during gym this morning. You really have some nice moves. The team could sure use someone with a nice jump shot like yours.” What is the coach really saying?

Two students are walking into class discussing an upcoming test. Both students stayed up late studying the wrong unit. One student is dissapointed that they have to complete essay questions rather than multiple choice questions, because essay questions are usually harder.
Maya stared at her open backpack. Her notebook wasn’t inside. When the teacher asked to collect the assignments, Maya’s face flushed red, and she avoided eye contact.
Your class is working quietly at their desks. Suddenly a loud, buzzing noise begins filling the building. Your teacher shouts, “All right, stay calm. You all know what to do. Let’s move quietly.”

John rushed into the classroom, his hair still damp and shirt slightly wrinkled. His backpack was unzipped, and papers spilled out as he sat down. The clock read 8:17 AM, and the bell had rung over 10 minutes ago.
John was running late to class.
When Sarah walked into the room, everyone shouted “Surprise!” She covered her mouth, her eyes wide and sparkling. She smiled and started laughing softly.
Excited/happy because her friends put on a surprise party for her.
As Lily walked home, she noticed the sky growing darker. The wind picked up, and she felt a few drops of rain on her arm. People around her were opening umbrellas and rushing for cover. Lily looked up and started walking faster.
A rainstorm.
A group of boys is standing around at a school dance. Sam says to Dillon, “Haley keeps looking over at you. She told me this morning that she was looking forward to dancing with you tonight.” What is Sam really saying to Dillon?
You should ask Haley to dance.
Camille says to her friend, “I get tired of you always borrowing pens from me.”
Camille's friend asks to borrow pens from her every single day.
Mr. Lee walked into the classroom and saw a broken window. There was a soccer ball on the floor nearby, and a few students were looking at each other, wide-eyed and quiet.
The students kicked the ball into the window and broke it.
After the game, the team crowded around the scoreboard. Their faces were bright with smiles, and they high-fived each other. Jake threw his arms in the air and shouted, “We did it!”
Happy because they won the game.
At a crowded restaurant, a waiter holding a tray of full drinks turned too quickly and bumped into the edge of a table. One glass began to tip toward a customer who hadn’t noticed.
The waiter is going to drop the drinks on the customer.
It’s a warm summer day and you’re going to a large family reunion in a park. As you get ready to leave, your dad says, “Is that what you’re wearing?"
The dad is suggesting that you did not dress appropriately for the weather.
Emma stood next to her car on the side of the road. One tire was completely flat, and she was holding her phone, staring at it. In the distance, a tow truck was pulling off the highway exit.
Emma got a flat tire and a tow truck is about to pick her up.
There are three packages stacked on a front porch. One box is from a pet supply company, another is from a bookstore, and the third has a return label already attached. The house lights are off, and a newspaper from two days ago is still on the lawn.
The family is out of town.
Jason sat on the curb, staring at his bike with a bent wheel. He kicked the tire gently and looked around, unsure what to do next.
Upset because his bike is broken.
Jamie looked at the clock and jumped out of bed. It was 8:42 AM. His backpack was still on the floor, his shoes were by the door, and the school bus normally came at 8:45. He grabbed a granola bar and ran toward the front door without brushing his hair.
Jamie might miss the bus, or he might make it at the last second.
You’re using the computer during study hall in the media center. Halfway through class, the librarian walks over and says, “From what I see, it doesn’t look like you’re using the Internet for schoolwork. There are people waiting who need to do research for assignments.”
The librarian is asking the student to start completing schoolwork on the school computer.
A man jogged down the sidewalk, breathing heavily, holding only an empty dog leash in his hand. He kept glancing side to side, calling out, “Milo! Milo!” as he crossed the street and looked into nearby yards.
The man lost his dog and was now looking for it.
A woman sits alone at a table for four in a crowded café. She checks her phone repeatedly, doesn’t order anything, and occasionally looks toward the entrance
The woman is waiting for other people to arrive.
Emma’s face lit up when her teacher said, “You did an excellent job on your presentation!” She smiled shyly and looked down at her notes.
Proud because her teacher is giving her a compliment.
