The following information about Wikis is discussed between two nursing instructors on lunch break. All of the following are true about Wikis except... A) A Wiki is a Web site that allows anyone to contribute and edit content. B) Wikis offer a tool to disseminate information, foster collaboration, share resources, and assist research teams. C) Wikis are a technology that can benefit mental health nursing practices D) Web content on a Wiki can be used for nursing education even if it has not been peer reviewed.
What is D. It is the responsibility of healthcare professionals to use caution when using web content for clinical practice that has not undergone rigorous peer review. (p. 470)

Classroom response systems (CRS) are a burgeoning technology in the modern classroom that lets information from a student’s assigned handheld clicker, to transfer to the instructor’s computer during classroom activities. This system has a twofold benefit of encouraging students to arrive on time and prepare for lecture. True or false? These clickers achieve this by taking attendance when a student clicks his or her answer, and by collecting data on the level of understanding of the subject matter.
What is True. Called classroom polling, the instructor can provide short quizzes at the beginning of class consisting of multiple-choice questions that end shortly after the start time of the class. The CRS collects answers “clicked in" by each student and displays them on a frequency distribution while simultaneously using that “click” to mark the student as present in the attendance record. An informatics instructor is trying to ascertain the understanding of a virtual learning environment (VLE) from two different students. Student A says, “Virtual learning environments can be just as effective as traditional classroom instruction”, while Student B asserts, “This type of learning is not real or authentic because we are not instructed face to face”. Which response does the instructor associate with a student that has a correct understanding of virtual learning environments?
What is the response given by Student A. Baseline research has demonstrated that a virtual learning environment is at least as effective as traditional instruction. Student B must understand that even though the term "virtual" means no face to face contact is experienced, it does not mean that this learning is not real. The learning is real, but it is the environment that is virtual. (p. 468)

Successful adoption of health information technology (IT) to facilitate consumer education between healthcare providers requires a successful partnership founded on 6 principles including: (1) consumer engagement in healthcare, (2) consumer access and control of personal health information, (3) universal consumer access to electronic health information tools and services, (4) consumer privacy, (5) consumer trust, and (6) consumer participation and transparency. Which of these principles would be MOST important for a nurse to consider for a non-English speaking, 60 year old man with hearing loss living on a farm in Colorado?
What is principle 3. Having access to tools that engage consumers through use of electronic health information should be universal and designed to meet the needs of patients that fall into specific consumer groups, including those who are poor, rural, older, physically disabled, or do not speak English. Mobile devices have infiltrated almost every aspect of daily living from unlimited access to the internet and social media to becoming a regularly used tool to view radiographic images needed for patient care. A nurse who wants to improve the department’s organization by selecting a mobile device recommends that they buy ipad tablets. Another nurse disagrees, and asserts her smart phone is plenty. What are some pro's and con's for the use of each device.
What is: The size of the mobile device, the compatibility of certain applications, the type and volume of data the device can support. see rationales below Size of device: If it cannot fit into a lab coat pocket it may be less practical to lug around in the clinical setting, but Patients may have a harder time viewing a procedure video on something like a smart phone as compared to an Ipad with a larger screen. Compatibility of certain applications: Some apps are designed for smart phones and some are specifically designed for tablets. Even if some apps appear to work over multiple devices their may be limited functionality on one device compared to the other. For example, a pocket lab values app may have less functions on a smart phone compared to a tablet like the I pad. Type and volume of data the device can support: Data entry is part of the nursing profession and knowing the input features of certain devices like the keyboard can be the selling point if someone is constantly inputting large amounts of data. The type of data, whether its voice recordings or numerical, can dictate which device is used because certain tablet apps allow for more complex data entry compared to less functional apps available on the smart phone. Use of computers allows for more complex data entry, more storage, and is more universal than use of a on-screen keyboard on an ipad. Using computers for more complex data entry and a smart phone for less complex data entry would be an option over learning how to use a tablet.
