Scholars are not sure who developed writing first. However, EGYPTIANS and the SUMERIANS in Mesopotamia were both developing systems of writing about the same time. Sumerians had cuneiform writing as early as 3100 B.C.E. and Egyptians had hieroglyphs around 3200 B.C.E. (Page 109, Textbook)
