Summary Tasks

Participants read an article independently and then discuss. Usually participants read different articles and then share a summary or takeaways from the one they read with other participants.

Coffee and Papers

Participants take on the “role” of a character to engage in a live enactment or scenario in order to demonstrate new skills and behaviors to solve realistic challenges. 

Role Play

A group of selected individuals who have experience in the subject matter are invited to share their knowledge. Participants listen and ask questions. 

Panel

Participants do an activity that (usually but not always) involves an element of competition and fun. It can also be a way for the instructor to evaluate what has been learned. 

Games

Participants move around the room reading texts (i.e. Flipcharts) or images. They take notes, discuss, or read/view the texts (i.e. Flip Charts) or images.

Gallery Walk

Participants are given open time to come up with and share uncensored ideas and solutions to answer a question or problem. This can be done in small or large groups.

Brainstorming

Participants respond to a question/prompt one at a time in a designated order. Repeat until all questions have been answered. 

Round Robin

This activity helps participants identify what they have learn and allows instructors to check for participant understanding.

Debrief/Reflection

Instructor provides index cards for each participant to anonymously write an answer to a question. The question may be focused on procedures, opinions, experiences, etc.  

Response Cards

Participants prepare a mini lesson for the class based on content that has already been taught by the instructor

Teach-Back

In this activity, the instructor asks volunteers to form a discussion circle in the middle of the room, with other participants observing from outside the circle. Participants outside the circle may be asked to provide feedback or observations during or after the discussion. 

Fishbowl

Instructor gives participants a  to test existing knowledge, or gauge how much they learned in the session. This can be written or administered orally. 

Quiz

Participants are provided vignettes or short examples of situations based on real-life or realistic situations they may face in their work. Case Studies are longer versions of this method.

Critical Incidents

Participants are divided into smaller groups and given a topic to become an "expert" in. They then share that knowledge with people from other groups (who are experts in a different topic).

Jigsaw

Participants form two lines and face each other. The instructor calls out speaking prompts or questions for the participants to discuss with the person across from them.

Duplicates a real-life setting in which skills are required and provides participants with an opportunity to learn and practice skills
