What are organisms?
Organisms are living things.
What two categories do scientists classify organisms into?
Living and Nonliving
Give an example of a biotic organism
bird, tree, insects, humans, (anything living)
What is a habitat?
A particular area where each species lives. An earthworm's habitat is the soil. The habitat for the bird is the branches of trees. The habitat for the squirrels is the trunks of trees.
What is an herbivore?
An animal that only eats plants
Give an example of abiotic organisms.
soil, water, air, sun (not living)
What is a carnivore?
An animal that only eats meat
An animal that eats plants and animals
Give an example of an abiotic thing and how it affects biotic organisms.
sun feeds plants, fire ants live under rocks (protection), beavers build lodges under logs,
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is the interactions between abiotic (non-living) and biotic (living) things in an area. The relationship between all living and nonliving things in an area.
What is a producer?
Plants which produce their own food and provide food for other organisms.
What is a secondary consumer?
An animal that eats Primary consumers. (It eats herbivores.) A coyote eats rabbits.
Give examples of populations, and communities as it relates to ecology.
Population: roadrunner, diamonback rattlesnake, coyote
Community: Desert
An animal that eats only plants (herbivore)
What is a tertiary consumer?
An animal that eats the secondary animal. Cheetah eats the gazelle
