What is Sharecropping? 

Labor system that evolved during and after Reconstruction whereby landowners furnished laborers with a house, farm animals, tools and advanced credit in exchange for a share of the laborers’ crop.   Sharecropping gave African Americans more control over their daily work and social lives than during the slavery era, it often resulted in sharecroppers owing more to the landowner than they were able to repay.
