Internet Terminology 1
A term used to encompass data and applications stored remotely and delivered/ accessed via the internet.
What is Cloud?
The World Wide Web address of a site on the Internet.
What is URL?
Malicious software that infects your computer, such as computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware, and adware.
What is Malware?
Malicious computer programs often sent as an email attachment or a download with the intent of infecting your computer, as well as the computers of everyone in your contact list.
What is a Virus?
These items are needed to set it up: Broadband Internet connection and modem, Wireless router, & Wireless network adapters.
What is a Wireless Network?
The group of letters after a period or "dot" in a file name that indicates the format or type of file.
What is File name extension?
A four-part or eight-part electronic serial number that identifies every computer, cell phone, and device that accesses the Internet for tracking purposes (like a license plate).
What is IP address?
It is a standalone malware computer program that replicates itself in order to spread to other computers. It typically causes harm to their host networks by consuming bandwidth and overloading web servers.
What is a Worm?
A type of malware that restricts access to your computer or your files and displays a message that demands payment in order for the restriction to be removed.
What is Ransomware?
It manages and coordinates network traffic.
What is a Router?
A piece of computer software or hardware that restricts the data that is allowed to flow through (blocks undesirable traffic).
What is a Firewall?
Unsolicited "junk" e-mail sent to large numbers of people to promote products or services
What is Spam?
A denial of service attack when a malicious user sabotages a specific website or network by overwhelming it with traffic.
What is DDoS?
The cable that is used to connect computers
What is Ethernet /CAT 5?
It communicate with the router and acts as the gateway to the Internet.
What is a Modem?
A piece of information sent by a Web server to a user's browser.
What is a Cookie?
To switch a computer off and on again, allowing its operating system and programs to be reloaded.
What is Reboot?
Fake emails, text messages and websites created to look like they're from authentic companies. They're sent by criminals to steal personal and financial information from you. This is also known as “spoofing”.
What is Phishing?
Part of the CPU that maintains orders and direct the operation of everything in the computer.
What is Control Unit?
Sending a signal to prove that the router is there and that your computer is connected to the it.
What is 'pinging a router'?
A special computer connected to a network that provides (serves up) data.
What is a Server?
Short-term, temporary memory that contributes to the speed of the computer.
What is RAM?
A means to point you to a malicious and illegitimate website by redirecting the legitimate URL. Even if the URL is entered correctly, it can still be redirected to a fake website.
What is Pharming?
Part of CPU where all the actual execution of commands take place.
What is Arithmetic and Logic Unit?
It is a method used to capture personal information when computer information is shared over an unsecure Wi-Fi network. Make sure to connect to the correct network and only use a Wi-Fi network that requires a password.
