Definitions
Words used in academic dialogues, texts, and essays. They often involve more complicated synonyms of words that we currently use.
What is Academic Words?
A statement that sets up the central point, main idea and/or argument, of your essay. It is typically included in the introductory paragraph.
What is a thesis statement?
This method of persuasion and information broadcast (of the three types used) can be seen in murder mysteries where the main character is a professional detective.
What is ethos?
The author's purpose is to convey information and explain a topic in a clear and objective way.
What is inform?
Facts, statistics, quotes, or anecdotes that support the claims made in an argumentative essay.
What is evidence?
An educating sample of writing written to examine and/or evaluate a topic or an issue.
What is an essay?
The addition of this part differentiates an argumentative essay thesis from an expository essay thesis.
What is a claim?
This example of appeal can be seen through a public health campaign citing statistics on the rise of childhood obesity to advocate for healthier school lunches.
What is logos?
This author's purpose present arguments and try to convince the reader to adopt a specific viewpoint.
What is persuade?
An opposing argument or viewpoint briefly acknowledged and refuted in an argumentative essay.
What is counterclaim?
Another more professional term for persuasive used in the context of essays. (i.e. instead of persuasive essays, we would replace the word persuasive with our answer)
What is Argumentative Essays?
The restatement of your thesis that is usually included in your conclusion paragraph.
What is thesis restatement?
This example of appeal can be seen through a political ad showing images of a war-torn country and warns of the dangers of electing the opposing candidate.
What is pathos?
This author's purpose allows the author to writing using humor, vivid language, or storytelling to capture the reader's attention.
What is entertain?
The two main characteristics of a clear thesis statement.
What is concise and coherent?
Essays written based on thorough research and examination in order to inform and educate the reader about a specific topic.
What is expository essays?
The part of your essay that leaves your reader with something to think about, a question, or an action to take.
What is Call to Action/closing statement?
This type of appeal uses vivid language, imagery, and storytelling to evoke emotions in the audience and influence their decisions.
What is pathos?
This author's purpose can be seen through a comic strip that uses funny illustrations and dialogue to tell a story.
What is entertain?
Expository writing that explores the solutions for various problems through factual data.
What is problem and solution?
This type of evidence in an essay relies on the credibility and expertise of established sources like scholarly journals, research papers, or quotes from respected figures. It strengthens the writer's claims and adds authority to their arguments.
What is a credible source?
Often used between body paragraphs to connect them and help the reader see the connection between ideas and arguments. It can signal a similarity, contrast, or cause-and-effect relationship.
What is transition words/phrases?
These two words are a broader term for the three techniques used to convince an audience.
What are rhetorical appeals?
This author's purpose can be seen through a textbook that explains the history of the Roman Empire.
What is inform?
