What are: Tiny pieces of a silver alloy that are melted between metal to fuse them together.
Solder
Why must your hair be tied back when soldering?
To keep it from catching on fire.
What type of gas do we use with our micro torches?
Butane
What will happen if you don't pickle or clean your project before soldering?
Your solder wont melt.
It wil either stay in a square or ball up.
What is the definition of soldering, when referring to metal smithing?
Soldering is a technique used to join two pieces of metal by melting a filler metal between them. The filler metal, having a lower melting point, bonds the pieces together upon cooling.
What is 1 piece of safety gear you must wear when soldering?
Safety glasses
What is the purpose of using flux?
Keeps your metal/solder cleans and stops them from oxidizing.
Also helps the solder stick, but not the main purpose.
If your solder job fails the first time, what do you do?
Pickle it and try to solder it again
Why does the filler metal (solder) need to have a lower melting point than the metal pieces?
Because we do not want to melt our projects. We only want our solder to melt, to hold our pieces of metal together.
What is the purpose of the ventilation fan?
To keep the air clear of butane gas.
Our fans that clean the air are called induction ventilation fans. What does induction mean in this sense?
The fans are taking air in from the front, cleaning it in the filters, and then blowing the air out from the back.
When heating with the torch, why should you avoid pointing the flame directly at the solder pieces at first?
The solder can fly off, and we are trying to heat the metal, not the solder pieces.
Silver solder is an alloy. What is an alloy?
A mixture of two or more metals, or a metal and one or more other elements, created by melting the ingredients together
What are 3 things you should do when using power tools (torch) that will keep you, and those around you, safe?
Hint: from safety test
Concentrate on your work
Face the Machine
Watch where your hands are
What is the tool called that we dip our hot metal into to cool it off.
Quench cup
Your solder melted, but only on one side of your project, it did not connect on your solder seam. What went wrong?
Your joint was probably not flush, so the solder couldn't fill the seam.
Or you didn't evenly heat the metal, so the solder stayed on the side that was hotter.
