What is the Charter College dress code? Why is this important to follow?

Scrubs, neat and clean, no gel or acrylic fingernails, they need to be short and clean, hair needs to be up and out of your face, facial hair neat and trimmed, no hoodies, closed toed shoes are required, you will not be allowed in the lab if you are not in proper dress code.

This is important as it not only prepares you for your career but also because it protects you. We work with bacteria and need to follow infection control measures to keep us safe.

Skill bin are available at the back of the class and have skills set up for you to practice anytime whether Miss K is here or not, in the classroom. These will help you build a foundation to learn and grow from on the skills available. Perfect this list and you will be that much more prepared for externship.

I do not want to see your phone out, if I see it you will lose half your points for the day. Phones are not allowed in the lab period. Class starts at 9am, you need to be in the door before 9am as Miss K will shut the door at 9am and if you are not in the door you will need to wait until the first break at 9:50am to enter, you will lose points on attendance for this. Same goes after each 10 min break and lunch.

What GPA do I need to maintain to go out to externship and graduate?

2.0 which requires a C average per module, if this GPA is not met you will pay to retake classes until it has been met or you will not go to externship and you will not graduate.

Will I learn instruments during school?

Yes, some of them, we do cover a lot of instruments in class but only have so much time to repeatedly go over them so the majority of instrument identification is up to you. Use your instrument guide and kahoots to practice these. The same goes for procedure set ups, we will go over each at least one time but may not have time for more than that so practice is up to you.

Do I need to stay at externship all day? What if I have things going on?

Externship is a class, attendance is mandatory, it is like a 5 week interview and you will treat it as a job. You need to communicate and be a team member, it is not optional and you will be dismissed or fail if you slack off and do not take it seriously.

300

If I miss a day how can I get the materials I missed?

If you miss a day it is up to you to ask me what handouts you might have missed, if you do not ask you will not be given the missed work and your grade will suffer.

What qualifies as a sufficient DQ post and response post?

Posts need to add to the conversation. Your initial post should be detailed and show a deep understanding of the topics being discussed. Responses should add to the conversation and just agreeing with someone does not count. Try finding an informative video to link or asking in depth questions, you will lose points if your responses do not meet this criteria.

What am I expected to do during externship?

This is your final class it is your internship, you will be applying your skills from school to your time there. This means assisting, sterilizing, setting up rooms, seating patients, etc. if you do not jump in and participate you will not pass and graduate. You need to be confident and ready by the time you go out and that is up to you.

What is Dr Day?

Dr. Day is when your patients will come in to be evaluated by the Dr. All we do is look in their mouth and the Dr will confirm if we will be able to take x-rays, place sealants (and which teeth) and coronal polish their teeth. We are not a hygiene school we do not clean teeth or do procedures, not for free and not at all so do not advertise as such. All you will be doing to patients if they qualify is polishing, placing sealants and taking xrays

How can I exhibit active listening?

When a lecture is being given you need to give your complete undivided attention, I do not want to see sleeping, texting, checking emails, working on homework, etc. If I see that you are not paying attention you will get a warning, if you do it again you will get a zero for attendance for the day.

What happens if I miss class, leave early or show up late?

You lose points for the day as well as missing out on important content, our program is a two year program that has been redesigned to fit into 10 months. You are here twice a week only and therefore a single day consists of an entire weeks worth of content, missing a day or even part of a day will set you behind and require you to come in on your own time and learn the content. However, you will not get points back for missing class. Attendance is 50% of your grade.

500

Is coming to class enough to prepare for externship?

No, class is only twice a week, it is up to you to study, practice, come to open lab and get as much hands on experience and time as you can or you will not feel ready in 10 months. It flies by and we do not always have time to keep repeating content, some skills you learn in class will not be repeated in class again, it is up to you to study and practice them.

500

Who can I bring as patients? How can I find patients?

Finding patients is up to you, you may use classmates, people around campus, friends, family, etc. They need to be at least 18 years old and have all of their teeth.

500

How many modules do I have before externship?

7 modules, and it flies by, if this is your second class you are already down to 5 left! Dental Assisting school is hard and it is a lot of work, so be prepared to put in effort because if you do not then I will not sign off on you going to externship.
