What is a shot?
The relationship between the width of the rectangular film image to its height
What is aspect ratio?
Another name for continuity editing that reflects its goal to remain unnoticed by the viewer
What is invisible editing?
The sounds of daily life, appropriate to the setting, that accompany the film image
What is ambient sound?
All of the events of the narrative, including not only those that we see and hear, but those we infer
What is the story?
Objects that are used by the actors or function as part of the set
What are props?
When a camera moves parallel to the ground on a set path, usually to follow some action
What is a tracking shot?
What is eye-line matching?
Spoken dialogue from a character or unidentified narrator who is not part of the scene
A shot, sequence, or scene that takes place in the past, before the present-day time frame established by the film
What is a flashback?
The time and space where the film's action takes place
What is the setting?
A standard lighting method used in film that includes a key light, fill light, and back light
What is three-point lighting?
A film sequence that relies on editing to condense or expand action, space, or time
What is a montage sequence?
Sounds that occur at the same time as they are produced, but the sources do not appear onscreen.
What is asynchronous sound?
Editing that alternates two or more lines of action occurring in different places or times, thereby connecting them
What is crosscutting?
The precise arrangements of objects and figures within the frame
What is composition?
Camera movement prompted by the characters and events in the film
What is motivated camera movement?
A way to maintain continuity by keeping the camera on on side of an invisible line, or axis, to preserve the left/right relationship between two characters
What is the 180 degree system?
Voice, sound effects, and diegetic music that are heard at the same time that their source appears onscreen
What is synchronized sound?
A transition where the first shot gradually disappears until the screen is completely blank, then subsequent shot gradually appears
What is fade-out/fade-in?
Actors, their gestures, and their facial expressions
What is figure behavior?
The area of the image between foreground and background that remains in focus
What is depth of field?
"Visible" editing that calls attention to itself by violating the rules of continuity, often disorienting the viewer for aesthetic reasons
What is disjunctive editing?
A transition from one scene to the next in which sound from the second scene is heard before we see its source, or sound from the first scene carries over briefly into the second scene
What is a sound bridge?
In film, the internal world created by the story that the characters experience
What is the diegesis?
