What is technology?
The application of science.
What are the five characteristics of living things?
Living things are made of cells, grow, reproduce, respond to their environment, and need energy (metabolism/ digestion/ respiration).
What are the five main things that Bob (the fish) would need to live?
Food, water, space, energy, and gases.
What are the four common organic compounds?
Lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids or enzymes (would accept either).
What is (one of) the chemical compounds of farts?
Methane.
What is the purpose of developing technology?
To solve problems.
What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction?
Sexual reproduction: offspring has two parents.
Asexual reproduction: offspring only has one parent.
Why can't a great white shark be found in a zoo?
A zoo cannot provide enough space for them to thrive.
What are lipids used for in the body?
Storing energy and insulation (think about the blubber of marine animals!)
How many cells make up the human body?
Trillions!
What are two potential harms of technology in the field of life science?
Chemicals can break down the ozone layer, oil spills harm wildlife, nuclear technology can harm life (any realistic technology/ harm will be accepted).
In the yeast lab, what characteristic of life was observed?
Respiration.
What is the most common need of living things that cannot be provided by a zoo?
Space.
What are organic compounds?
Compounds that contain carbon and are used by living organisms.
How can reacting to a stimulus benefit an organism?
Avoid danger/ harm, maintain homeostasis, adapt.
What is one beneficial example of technology in the field of life science?
Development of antibiotics, higher crop yields, disease prevention, insecticides/ pesticides, fertilizers (any reasonable benefit/ example will be accepted).
What is a stimulus?
Something in the environment that causes a response (ex. pupil dilating in low light, moving away from someone clapping).
How do plants get the energy they need to thrive?
Photosynthesis/ from the sun.
Why is sodium not an organic compound?
It does not contain carbon.
What are two metabolic processes that take place in living things?
Digestion (breaking down of food) and respiration (using gases to produce energy)
Do you think technology is inherently/ inevitably bad?
It depends on the people using the technology (would accept any reasonable answer).
What is the theory of spontaneous generation?
The idea that living things
Why is it important that different organisms use different gases in order to live?
If all organisms needed the same type of gas, the atmosphere would be out of balance (ex. humans rely on trees to produce oxygen, while trees rely on animals to expel carbon dioxide).
What causes lactose intolerance?
When your body is not able to produce (or does not produce enough) of the enzyme that breaks down lactose.
What are two types of nucelic acids?
DNA and RNA
