What is a mouth of a river?
the open area where the river feeds into a larger body of water
100
What percent of the earth's water is saline? (salt water?)
97%
100
What are the 3 main components in the Hydrological Cycle?
What is Condensation, Evaporation, Precipitation
100
A cloud falls under which part of the Hydrological Cycle
Condensation
100
What percent of all of Earth's water is fresh water?
3%
200
What is a delta?
a landform at the mouth of a river that is made of sedimentary deposits
200
What percent of all FRESH water comes in the form of glaciers (is frozen?)
75%
200
When a liquid evaporates, are its molecules gaining energy or losing energy?
What is gaining energy?
200
What are 3 "extra" parts of the Hydrological Cycle
subsurface runoff, surface runoff, transpiration (I would accept accumulation or collection as well)
200
What is Transpiration?
When plants absorb liquid water through their roots and release it as a gas (water vapor) through their leaves
300
What is a headwater?
The source of water the starts the river. (Happens at a high elevation like a mountain.)
300
Roughly what percent of all fresh water is subsurface water? (ground water)
25%
300
When you fog up a window by breathing on it, invisible water vapor in your breath is cooled by the window and forms drops of liquid water. What is this process called?
What is condensation?
300
In what season does hail most often occur?
summer
300
What is the difference between surface water and subsurface water?
surface water = on top of the Earth's surface (river, lake, pond) subsurface water = absorbed into the soil and Earth's surface (groundwater)
400
What is a tributary?
An stream of water that feeds into a larger one
400
Roughly what percent of all fresh water is surface water?
less than 1%
400
When and why does snow fall instead of rain?
When it is at a freezing temperature or lower, the precipitation is frozen.
400
What is the freezing point in Celsius?
0 degrees Celsius

Ms. Bridgeland sometimes walks outside in the freezing cold for recess duty, and when she walks back into the warm building, her glasses fog up. What is happening here? Explain the process.
This is condensation. The warm molecules in the school are slowing down when they hit the surface of the cool glasses. This results in a foggy surface, and sometimes even droplets of water!

How is an oxbow lake formed? Be specific.
A part of a meander is cut off when a flood cuts across it and sediment builds up, isolating it into its own new lake.
500
Why do we sometimes have powdery snow and why do we sometimes have moist snow that is great for throwing snowballs and building snowmen?
1) powdery snow means weather conditions are dry (not much moisture in the air) 2) wet snow means that weather conditions are humid (high amounts of moisture in the air)
500
What is the freezing point in Fahrenheit?
32 degrees Fahrenheit
500
How does hail form?
During thunderstorms, warm air currents push precipitation back up into the clouds, where they freeze and form ice pellets.
500
What is the name for water in a gaseous state?
Water Vapor
