100

A combination (or a mix) of two or more substances.

Mixture

I just bought a magnet, but it keeps getting stuck to all my other magnets! The opposite ends keep __________ each other!

Opposite ends (N & S) of a magnet attract each other.

100

When kool-aid powder is added to water, what are some PHYSICAL CHANGES that take place?

The COLOR of the water changes, the powder changes from a SOLID to a LIQUID, the TASTE of the water changes, the water becomes CLOUDY instead of CLEAR

100

My new yeti cup is AMAZING! It keeps my hot coffee hot all morning, and it keeps my iced tea cold all afternoon. What PHYSICAL PROPERTY of the Yeti cup am I describing?

Insulator. My Yeti cup is an INSULATOR since it does not allow THERMAL (heat) energy to get through easily.

100

UH OH! I dropped my new box of nails in the sandbox. What is a quick way to remove the iron nails from the sand so no one gets hurt?

Use a MAGNET. Iron is magnetic, sand is not.

200

What is a solution?

A solution is a special mixture of substances where one substance dissolved EVENLY into the other substance.

Bonus: Is SODA a solution?

200

I wanted to use water to test for relative density. I dropped two balls into the container of water. Ball A sank to the bottom. Ball B floated on top. Which ball is less dense than water?

Ball B is less dense than water because it floated on top.

200

I dropped one of my skittles in my glass of water this morning. I figured I would get it out later, but when I came back, the skittle WAS GONE! The water tastes a little sweet now, though...

What happened?

The parts of the skittle DISSOLVED EVENLY in the water and created a SOLUTION.

200

I was playing tennis yesterday and accidentally hit the ball into the neighbor's pool! Yikes! Am I going to have to swim to the bottom of the pool to get the tennis ball?

Some objects, like ping pong balls, soccer balls, and tennis balls are LESS DENSE than water and will FLOAT on the water.

...good thing it wasn't a golf ball!

200

OH NO! I accidentally added salt into my water. How can I get it out????

EVAPORATION will remove the water and leave the salt behind.

300

The property of repelling (> <) or

attracting (< >) metals to a magnet.

Magnetism

300

I'm measuring the mass of an object using a triple beam balance. The three sliders say, "300", "4", and "60". What is the mass of the object?

364g

300

I am looking for a soluble substance. Which substance would change from a solid to a liquid when mixed with water, sand or salt?

Salt is soluble  and will dissolve in the water. Sand is insoluble and will not dissolve.

300

Like one of the little pigs, I am building my house out of straw. When I install my copper wiring for electricity, should I use wood, plastic, or metal to cover the wires? I don't want to burn down my straw house!

Plastic and Wood are both insulators, but plastic is flexible, so it's the best choice to cover the wires.

300

After building my house, I had a bunch of different metal screws, nails, nuts, and bolts lying around. I made a mixture by putting them all in a jar. Yesterday, I accidentally dropped a magnet in the jar. What happened?

Only SOME of the metals are going to be attracted to the magnet. Not all metals are magnetic. The iron and steel nails will be attracted to the magnet, but aluminum, brass, copper, and nickle will not.

400

A substance that does not allow energy (either electricity or heat) to pass through easily is an...

insulator. If energy like electricity and heat can pass through, it's a conductor.

400

I am using a thermometer to check the temperature of water when it freezes and when it boils. At what temperatures (Celsius) does water freeze and boil?

Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius and boils at 100 degrees Celsius.

400

Uhg! I'm trying to boil some water for spaghetti, but this water is taking FOREVER to get to 100 degrees celcius. What substance could I add to the water to change water's boiling point?

Adding salt to water will change it's freezing point and boiling point. Salt water takes LONGER to freeze, but LESS TIME to boil.

400

During my lab, I measured 20ml of kool-aid powder into my mixture. When it dissolved, how many ml of kool-aid powder are in the solution?

Uhh, still 20ml, right? The amount isn't going to changes just because it dissolved. There is still 20ml worth of kool-aid powder in the solution.

400

I made a mixture four substances. It was very easy to separate. Did I make a solution, too, or just a mixture?

A mixture can be easily separated. Solutions require a little more work.

500

The ability to dissolve into another substance.

Solubility. If you said "solution", you're close! A solution is what you MAKE when it dissolves.

500

I want to build something to help me test if an object is an insulator or a conductor. I have a battery and some wire...what tool could I build?

A CIRCUIT can be used to test for conductivity.
500

What do I need to add in order to change ice to a liquid and then a gas?

Adding HEAT or THERMAL ENERGY allows us to change a solid to a liquid and a liquid to a gas.

500

While baking pancakes, the recipe called for some oil and some water. When I combined them in the bowl, they would not mix. What does that tell me about oil?

Oil is not soluble in water. They don't mix.
500

OH NO! I was at the beach and some sand got into my water. THEN, someone dumped some salt into my water, too! How can I separate this mixture of sand, salt, and water?

Use a FILTER to get rid of the sand, then EVAPORATE the water. All that will remain is the salt.

Too bad I'm still thirsty...
