What are "properties" in science investigations?
Properties are words used to describe the way an object looks, feels, smells, sounds, reacts, etc.
In the video from class, what did we observe happening to the beans placed in water for 3 days?
The beans began to absorb the water and swell, they began to sprout a bit and began filling the jar to the top.
Describe the properties of a lima bean.
Medium in size, white/tan, soft seed coat, smooth inside...
What is a vegetable?
All other parts of the plant like the roots, leaves, and stems. They do not contain seeds.
What are some properties of seeds we discussed in class?
shiny, smooth, black, brown, small, round, rough, large, bumpy, big, white, clear, tiny, oval....
What happens to seeds when they are soaked in water?
When seeds are soaked in water they grow because they absorb much of the water. Water penetrates through the seed coat, which causes the embryo to grow. The seed coat eventually bursts making way for a tiny plant to emerge.

Is a tomato a fruit or vegetable, why?
A tomato is a fruit because it bears seeds that will grow a new tomato plant and because it comes from the ovary of a flowering plant, which we eat.
Johnny was 6 different types of seeds he had never seen or heard of before. He was excited to learn about the properties of each seed. He recorded their color, texture, size, and shape, but still wanted to know more. He decided to taste each seed to record that as one of the seeds properties. Is taste an appropriate property to record during a science investigation? Explain your answer.
No. You should never taste anything you are working with during an investigation because you never know if it is safe for your body. Scientists do not taste the materials they work with and we do not record the way things taste as a property in our investigations.
What do roots do for plants?
Roots keep the plant standing tall, store food, and absorb water and nutrients.
What is the function of the lima bean seed coat?
Protects what is inside of the lima bean.
A carrot is a vegetable because it is a root that grows in the ground. We eat the root and it contains no seeds.
Compare and contrast apple seeds and pepper seeds. How are they alike? How are they different?
Apple seeds and pepper seeds are both small. Pepper seeds are white and flat, but apple seeds are dark brown to black and more round. Peppers often have more seeds than apples. Both peppers and apples have a core that contains their seeds.

Banana's do not contain seeds.

The cotyledon provides food for the embryo, or little plant.
