In Madinah after the hijrah, the Muslims didn't have a way to call for prayer yet. They were thinking of using a bell but the Prophet didn't like it because it resembled the Christians. Eventually, two Sahabis, 'Abdullah ibn Zayd and 'Umar ibn al-Khattab saw the adhan in their dreams. 'Abdullah was first and told the Prophet about this, who told him to teach it to Bilal, since he had a better voice.
