Who was the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)?

Khadija

A very affluent widow, Khadija hired men to take care of her commercial status. She hired the Prophet Muhammad, (PBUH) who had not received the call to prophethood yet, to be in charge of her business in Syria, and sent her servant Maysarah to accompany him. This trade brought back exceedingly high profits and Maysarah returned with good word about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This led to Khadija asking the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to marry her, and he soon accepted even though he was 25 years old, and Khadija was 40. After fifteen years of marriage, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received the call to prophethood. Khadija supported him when very few did, and she died during a boycott the idolaters of Mecca had placed on the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers. This year was later titled "The Year of Mourning."

What has been the official symbol for Islam ever since the time of Muhammad?

It has no symbol.

The crescent moon only signifies the new month, or other holy days, as Muslims follow the lunar calendar to keep track of days. Also, the reason the crescent is on many flags of Muslim nations is because it was the symbol of the Byzantine Empire. When the Ottomans overtook them, they took the crescent as their symbol as well. Since the Ottomans controlled many of those nations, they chose to keep the same symbol. It is a symbol of their history, not of the Islamic faith.
