What is Accessibility
While children are playing, the teacher creates a running monologue, labeling the toys they use, saying what they do with them, telling them what other children are doing, and including talk about other experiences that are meaningful to the children. She individualizes the talking and directs it at specific children, pointing out things the child looks at, using their names to get their attention, or sharing a focus with the child. She tends to do the same kind of monologue during routines. She talks in simple, easily understandable language in a normal voice that might also be used with her peers, and she never uses “baby talk”, silly sounds or nonsense syllables. You hear no singing during the observation, except she does sing a soft song when helping one child go to sleep. She includes all children as she talks to them.
Answer Key: What is #9 - Talking with Children under LANGUAGE & BOOK
Additional Information: This teacher would be marked “no” at 3.4 because She does “NOT” use talk with children in a playful way. Indicator 3.4 says Staff sometimes talk with children in playful way (ex: use nonsense syllables, etc.). Note the scenario says: she never uses “baby talk”, silly sounds or nonsense syllables

DAILY DOUBLE
In this classroom children ages 2-3 years. During the 3 hours of observation, children were served breakfast and lunch with very little to no wait times. There were times when children had free choice with all of the play materials in the classroom and interacted with their peers. A 20-minute opportunity for outdoor play was also experienced by all. Children were required to participate in 3 separate group times and approximately 15 minutes each (total 45 minutes within 3 hours). During each group time 1 or 2 children were not engaged for some of the time. These children were not upset.
Since this scenario touches on various areas. We can make this a daily double and see how many answers we get…

Referring to page 12 in the ITERS-3 book and keeping in mind the Daily Double Scenario at 400… Even if the children have 3 group activities they would score through level 1 and level 2. However, because of the 45 mins. in group activities and the 20 minutes outdoors. This is considered a ______________ lapse. Thus, they would not make the 5 or 7 level.
1 Level – No Play Time
3 Level – Some Play Time
5 Level – Good amount of play time
7 Level – A lot of play time
What is “major” lapse?
Additional information: This scenario examines the term accessibility and addresses major and minor lapses with accessibility. Study page 12 to understand how accessibility works with various age groups. Children need a lot of play time. Especially if you believe in play-based learning. Major lapses are 10+ minutes of accessibility and Minor lapses are under 10 minutes.
