Ms. Coleman's recipe calls for 2/3 cup of sugar. You are making 1/2 of the recipe.
How much sugar do you need?

2/3 *  1/2  =  2/6   =  1/3

WHAT IS 1/3 CUP OF SUGAR: (2/3 *  1/2  =  2/6   =  1/3)

Why We Use Multiplication (Not Subtraction)

🔎 Key Phrase: “1/2 of the recipe”

The word “of” in math almost always means multiply.  When we say:

“1/2 of 2/3 cup”  We are asking: 👉 What is half of 2/3?

That is a multiplication situation:Subtraction would mean we are taking away some sugar.

For example: If the problem said, “You used 1/2 cup LESS than 2/3 cup,”

then we would subtract. If it said, “How much sugar is left after using 1/2 cup?”

then we would subtract.  But that’s not happening here.

We are not removing sugar. We are scaling the recipe down.
