Heading
Grabs the reader’s attention at the beginning of an essay
Hook
The narrator is a character who can reveal only his/her own thoughts and feelings (I, me, my)
First person narration
Interrupting the chronological order to describe something that took place at an earlier time
Flashback
Hints to suggest future events; create suspense and make readers eager to find out what will happen
Foreshadowing
A common phrase which means something different from its literal meaning but can be understood because of their popular use.
Idiom
Language that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, feel, touch, taste)
Imagery
Strongly suggest the truth; hinted or suggested
Implies
First conflict that sets the whole story in motion
Inciting incident
