definiton of motion
the action or process of moving or being moved
axis
an imaginary line running through the center of an object that the object spins around.
crust
the outer layer of the Earth
active volcano
a volcano that is erupting or has shown signs that it may erupt in the near future.
thuderstorms
forms from a cumulonimbus cloud- usually brief, heavy storm that consists of rain, strong winds, lightning, and thunder.
what is the reference point
place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion.
rotate
turning on an axis, spinning
mantle
the layer of hot, solid material between Earth's crust and core.
what is a volcano
a fissure in the earth's crust (or in the surface of some other planet) through which molten lava and gases erupt.
lightning
is an electric discharge that occurs between a positively charged area and a negatively charged area- can occur between two clouds or between the bottom of a cloud and the ground.
what is speed
the distance an object travels per unit line.
time zone
a belt like zone that is 15 degress of longitude in width, places in each zone have the same time.
asthenosphere
the soft layer of the mantle on which the lithosphere floats.
crater
a bowl-shaped opening at the top of a volcano.
flooding
can be caused by heaving rains during a thuderstorm.
velocity
speed in a given direction
direct light
light that hits the surface at ninety degrees, a right angle, light that hits an object directly.
outer core
a layer of molten iron and nickel that surrounds the inner core of earth.
hot spots
areas of volcanic activities that result from plumes of hot solid material that have risen from deep inside earths mantle.
hurricane
a severe storm that develops over tropical oceans and whose strong winds of more 120 km/h spiral in toward the intensely low-pressure center.
average speed
divide the total distance traveled by the total time.
hemisphere
One half of a sphere; either of the halves of Earth, North and South or East and West.
inner core
a dense sphere of solid iron and nickel at the center of earth.
quiet eruption
occurs when magma flows easily and gently bubbles out, the lava is thin and runny as it oozes out quietly from the vent. This type of magma has a low amount of trapped water vapor and silica, causing a more fluid viscosity and allowing the magma to flow.
eye
calm center of a hurricane- a core of warm, relatively calm air with low pressure and light winds.
