Risk is an uncertainty or probability concerning the potential for injury (or loss of resources!)
Why is having more than 1 facilitator a good thing?
Having two or more facilitators allows one person to assist any participants who are having difficulties!
What can you say to your students to help them foster awareness outdoors?
Notice how...
Can you hear...

What is the difference between being busy and being engaged?
To engage is to interact socially. Participants are active when they engage, they learn and ask questions.
Being busy is to be occupied by something. When you're busy, you are not necessarily learning something or being actively social.
What would you say to a child who is playing at great speeds (for example, during running activities or sports) instead of "be careful?"
"Find a safe spot for your [sticks, bags, water bottles, jackets, etc...] while you're running"
"I see that this is a busy area. I'm worried that someone not playing this game might fall over. Let's look out for others and give them a lot of space!"
"Should we move this game to a more open area?"
This model of disability says that disability is caused by the way society is organised.
What is the Social Model of Disability?
For health and safety outdoors, our 3 goals as educators are...
Keep our participants safe
Help them to learn
Do our best to ensure they have fun
What are some signs that your group is engaged?
They are paying attention and listening.
They are following requests and participating in activities.
They are asking questions.
They are answering questions.
They are reacting (laughing, having fun, contemplating)
What are some of the benefits of risky play?
Children who can master risky situations are less dependent on adults to manage hazards for them, and help them safely and confidently navigate the world around them as they transition into adulthood...
-Find and understand their limits
-Moving past boundaries and exploring the unknown
-Develop self confidence, resilience, problem solving, coordination/balance
- Lessen risk of injury
- Develop their own risk management skills
- Increase their curiosity
- Experience important emotions: Hesitation, Excitement, Fear, Pleasure, Mastery
- The ability to deal with failure

Think back to when you were a child. What subject or activity was the most engaging for you?
Thank you for your answers!
(When hummingbird was a hatchling he found that building things and building models was engaging for him, and Red Panda was engaged in books and making art)
What can you say to your students to help them develop their problem solving skills in the outdoors?
What's your plan...

Thank you for your answers! Please enjoy this surprised marmot :)
What is the name of the document from the Ministry of Education, where they specifically talk about engagement?
The document is called, "How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years."
This document states that every child is an engaged learner who explores the world with mind, body and senses. :)
You found an awesome activity for your class (good job!). The risk probability for this activity is low in severity but high in probability. Do you choose to run the activity?
Great answers!
Remember, risk varies depending on the context...remember to ask yourself, what does low severity mean in this case? What does high probability mean? How do you know that the activity has a high probability of a dangerous outcome?
In your class, there is a new student with dyspraxia (a common developmental movement and co-ordination disorder) who wants to play with their classmates during recess. Using the social model of disability, what can you do to help your student?
Use your alternatives to "Be Careful!"
