How many steps do raters need to take in order to become a certified rater?
1. Application – Raters with required qualifications submit their application to score the Speaking section.
2. Training – Each applicant goes through intensive online training.
3. Test – every rater has to pass a certification test to qualify to score.
4. Rater is certified
5. Daily calibration test – Before beginning a scoring session for a specific task, every certified rater must pass a calibration test. Raters who do not pass the daily calibration test after two tries are not allowed to score on that day.
6A. To minimize individual rater bias, all responses are individually scored by raters independently and anonymously. Raters are assigned to score a specific task type, not an examinee. For example, an individual examinee’s 4 speaking responses might be scored by four or more different raters, which contributes to higher reliability.
6B. Experienced and accurate raters are asked to take on a leadership role to help monitor rater scoring quality. One of their main responsibilities is to make sure that raters strictly follow the Scoring Guides and program protocols. Raters and these Scoring Leaders communicate regularly throughout the scoring session, which means raters receive specific feedback about their scoring performance during scoring sessions. An ETS content expert is available to answer questions and provide direction when needed for every scoring session.
7. Statistical analyses periodically provide rater statistics to inform decisions about training or remediation needs.
