While supervising your group on the playground a student trips on his shoelace and hits his head on the metal part of the equipment. His head is bleeding and you see him crying. What do you do?

Get to the child, make sure he's awake, breathing, and responsive. Ask the student what happened and any other students that were involved. Radio Sr. Rec right away. If it is a 911 emergency radio any available rec to watch your group for a minute and take the student inside right away. Document everything in your documentation notebook.

When dealing with a Childs behavior what do you need to be emotionally when responding?

Empathetic. You never know why a child is acting out so keeping a level mind and trying to understand the root of the behavior is the best tactic.

A parent continuously tries to pick their child up at 4pm with no early release form on file. Do you let them leave?

Yes, but Sr. Rec must make the parent aware that the early releases will start to affect their attendance which can result in dismissal from the program.

A child brings their own designated snack from home. They insist their parents specifically made this snack for ASES. How do you respond to the child?

State that the student is only allowed to eat the snack provided by ASES. Tell the student they can eat it before they get to the program but not one it starts.

One of the students had a strong attitude with their rec leader. The leader tried to reason with the student, but the student just kept their attitude going. When the leader responded they yelled at the student and tried to correct behavior. Was this the correct tone of voice to use?

No, Leaders should never yell at the students. This creates a hostile environment and can cause the situation to escalate.

While directing the group game outside you do a double headcount and realize a student is not with your group that was there previously. What steps do you begin to take?

Notify Sr. Rec that the student is gone and you didn't give permission to leave. *Sr. Rec would then begin looking around campus. Ask students if they know where he or she went. Scope out the area and see if you see the student in any close areas. Document the whole event for future offenses. If the child is not found in the expected areas ( Classroom, Cafeteria, Bathroom ) notify Andrea immediately.

A student that is normally well behaved is off the rails today. When told to sit down he cries and when told anything else he is defiant and defensive. What approach would you take?

Offer them a few minutes to decompress. Ask what the child is feeling and if there is anything you can do to help. Also, explain "flip the switch" which means to turn around their behavior. Ex. "Are you feeling better after having some time away? Lets try again. Go ahead and flip that switch and lets see an improvement. Can you help me with...."

A student has a parent that is a teacher. She comes to your classroom and says she's taking her kids home early. Do you let them go?

Notify Sr. Rec immediately for approval. Sr. Recs must always know when a student is being released and to who.

During snack you notice a student throw away their snack and proceed to sit down without eating. Is this something the students are allowed to do?

Yes, if the student doesn't want the snack provided by ASES then they must throw it away. There are no sharing snacks or giving snacks back as this throws off snack count.

The kindergarten leader sat with a student and listened to his day. The student started to cry and say all the awful things about his day. Give an example of how you would respond to this student.

Tell the student it is okay to cry, Offer some time to cool down, and then lead with a positive tone by reassuring it is a new time of the day and the rest can be so much better.

You have your group outside and notice a few students not participating in the group game. What do you do?

Ask why they're not participating. Try to convince them to participate. If they do not want to then, they have the choice of sitting and watching but that is all.

A repeat offender is back at it again. Today he is throwing things in the classroom, not listening to any leaders and attempting to harm other students. What approach do you take?

Explain to the child that their behavior needs an improvement. If you don't notice any changes notify Sr. Rec. Sr. Rec- give a verbal warning. If they are continuing then issue a write up and call parents, but always approve write ups through Andrea first.

During pickup two parents get into an argument that seems to be escalating. As a rec leader that still has more than half of your group what do you do?

Try your best to keep students occupied and their attention away from the altercation. Provide a group game to distract them.

Focused on eating as this is not a time to play around.

Traumatic experiences, Mental health issues, or anything that could possibly be offensive. If you have to second guess it, avoid it.

* UNLESS A STUDENT BRINGS THESE THINGS UP TO YOU. It is always good for the students to know you're there to listen or help if needed.

When outside with your group, you notice a strange man observing your group. After 5 minutes he is still just standing there watching. What are the steps you take in this situation?

Notify Sr. Rec and take the students inside. If they do or say anything suspicious or make you uncomfortable, also let your sr rec know of the details and document everything.

Two students get into a fight on the playground but you didn't see who started it. Each kid says it was the other. How do you determine which kid gets the consequences?

Assess the situation. Speak to both children and get the story. Then speak to some bystanders and get their story so that you can piece the information together. Regardless both students must be sent to Sr. Rec where they will decide next steps depending on past offenses.

At pickup it is 5:30 and your whole group is gone. Does this mean you can leave and go home?

No, Ask Sr. Rec if there is anything they need you to do. If they say it is ok for you to leave then you may go home.

A student is not finished with their snack and they insist they have to take it to the next activity. How would you handle this?

Tell the student that snack is over and it is time to move on. If it's just a bite or two they can finish while cleaning up and moving to the line but when its time to go they must be in line and ready.

A leader responds to their student trying to tell them a story by saying "I don't have time to listen to your story, we're busy doing a different activity." Was this the right thing to say? If no, how could this be said differently?

No, This could be reworded by saying "I would love to hear your story, but can you please wait until this activity is over because then I will be able to give you my full attention."

Its time to go outside and none of your students feel like going to play because its too hot. What do you do?

Give another option such as a classroom game or to do another activity until it cools down first. Get Sr. Recs approval for switching activities.

A student is being defiant after repeated attempts to get them to have a seat and do their work. They're now mad at you and decide to run out of the classroom. Do you run after them or do you stay with your group?

Radio Sr. Rec immediately while watching where the student is running but always stay with your group unless there is another leader close by that can keep an eye on your students for a minute.

It is 6:00 and you still have 5 kids left. Your Clock out time is 6:00, what are the next steps?

Sr. Rec will begin calling parents at 6:00. It is up to Sr. Rec which leader stays over with them to wait for parents but there must always be at least 2 leaders at a site at all times.
