These are standards or patterns, especially of social behavior, that are typical or expected of a group in order to help the group operate effectively.
What are NORMS?
In a listicle, these things stand out from the rest of the text, often in bold-faced type or underlined, so that the reader can easily identify them. They are much like topic sentences in an essay.
What are the points?
This is when the vowel SOUNDS (not just the same letter) are repeated in any part of a word in a phrase or a sentence. How now, brown cow?
What is assonance?
You do this when you want to look at things that differ between two or more writings or objects.
What is contrast?
A rebirth or revival from the Old French renaistre "to be born again", much like the Phoenix rising from the ashes!
What is Renaissance?
This is what the R. stands for in Keep It R.E.A.L. Aretha Franklin used to sing about it.
What is RESPECT?
This is the part of a listicle that lets the reader know why the topic is important and the main thing that you want to get accomplished. Write a good one and your readers just might get hooked!
What is an introduction?
An author's distinctive literary style, basic vision, and general attitude toward the world. What's that? Speak up!
What is voice?
You do this when you want to see what is similar between two or more writings or objects.
What is compare?
Educational and economic opportunities as well as a chance to live in more racially tolerant environments and become actual American citizens are just some of the reasons for this happening.
What is the Great Migration?
This is what it is called when people are given a fair and equal opportunity regardless of their differences. This way, everyone gets to see the ballgame!
What is EQUITY?
This is a short form of writing that uses a list as its thematic structure but is fleshed out with enough information to be published as an article. Why not both?
What is a listicle?
This is the use of figurative, descriptive language to represent objects, actions, and ideas in a way that appeals to people's physical senses. Use it well, and you have painted a picture in the minds of your readers!
What is imagery?
This organization for compare and contrast writing focuses on one subject and lists the points before going on to the next topic and listing the same points for that subject. It works best for short writings.
What is the Subject by Subject Method?
This is what the movement was called that saw the development of a neighborhood in New York City as a center for Black culture, art, music, and social change.
What is the Harlem Renaissance?
This is what the L. stands for in Keep It R.E.A.L. People who do this are generally excellent listeners!
What is LEAD?
In this part of a listicle, the writer states why what they wrote is important, the reasons why it is important, and then drops the microphone leaving the reader with something to consider. It puts the "ball" in the reader's "court".
What is the conclusion?
This is when something stands for something else. Peace, man . . . or is that victory, or anti-nukes, or maybe something else?
What is symbolism?
This fancy five-dollar college word is used to describe the act of putting two things close together to see what might be similar or different between them.
What is juxtaposition?
This section of Manhattan which covers three square miles became the largest concentration of black people in the world in America during the 1920s and 30s.
What is Harlem?
This is a set of beliefs or principles which help guide someone's actions. It was also Apollo's last name in the Rocky series.
What is a CREED?
These help the reader go from point to point well so that they don't get lost. Make them smooth, dude!
What are transitions?
This is a figure of speech that makes a comparison using like or as to make a description more vivid. Pshaw, it's like totally rad to use, dude!
What is a simile?
This structure for compare and contrast writing has paragraphs about certain points and relates how each subject compares and contrasts regarding that point. It works best for longer writings.
What is the Point by Point Method?
Though the North was a step up from the South, many Black Americans faced this when trying to find jobs and places to live.
What is segregation in housing and hiring? (They were told where to live and many could only land low-paying domestic jobs).
