Are owls an endangered species?

No, not all owls are endangered, but some species are at high risk, such as the Northern Spotted Owl and the Burrowing Owl. Many owl species face threats from habitat loss, climate change, and other human activities.

  • Habitat loss: The destruction and fragmentation of forests, wetlands, and grasslands reduce hunting areas and nesting sites.
  • Climate change: Extreme weather events, fires, and droughts negatively impact owl populations and their prey.
  • Human activities: Pesticides, collisions with vehicles and wind turbines, and hunting can cause mortalities.
  • Competition: The expansion of other species, like the Barred Owl, can outcompete and displace endangered owl species.
