Who is the Judge?
To find someone guilty of the crime they are accused of committing.
What is to Convict?
You committed the crime.
What is Guilty?
The place where the trial takes place.
What is the Court?
A minor officer of the court who guards jurors and has charge of prisoners while they are in the courtroom. This person announces the judge and swears people in to testify.
Who is the Bailiff?
A group of people (6 or 12) selected from the community to hear a trial. Each person is selected based on his or her ability to make fair decisions. They are instructed as to how the court system works, how to evaluate evidence, etc. This group of people gives the verdict, when present.
What is the Jury?
Any abnormal courtroom behavior, such as talking out of turn, yelling, crying, or cursing.
What is Contempt of Court?
You did not commit the crime.
What is Not Guilty?
When someone willfully lies under oath.
What is Perjury?
Someone who comes to court to testify on behalf of the defendant's good character.
Who is a Character Witness?
This person's job is to find the defendant guilty of the crime that he or she has been accused of committing. This person represents the State in court.
Who is the Prosecutor? (or District Attorney)
The punishment for being found guilty. If you are found guilty your punishment could be prison, jail, or probation.
What is the Sentence?
You are not saying you did or did not commit the crime. You are leaving it for the court to decide.
What is No Contest?
Anything that provides proof of a person's guilt or innocence at a trial.
What is Evidence?
The person who types every word spoken during the trial and keeps notes on the legal proceedings.
Who is the Court Reporter?
This person represents the accused in court. Their job is to find the best possible verdict for the defendant.
Who is a Public Defender? (or Defense Attorney)
The decision found by a jury or a judge, delivered at the end of the trial.
What is the Verdict?
You are not aware that you were doing anything wrong at the time of the crime or could not control your behavior due to a mental illness.
What is Not Criminally Responsible?
Two classifications of crime, one is more serious than the other.
What are: Felony (more serious) and Misdemeanor (less serious)?
These four individuals must agree to a plea bargain.
Who are: the Judge, the Prosecuting Attorney, the Defense Attorney, and the Defendant?
This person is permitted to testify at a trial because of special knowledge that is relevant to the case.
What is an Expert Witness?
The sentence is suspended, however, the person remains under supervision and must follow certain rules established by the judge.
What is Probation?
You plead guilty to a less serious crime and receive a lighter sentence, often probation.
What is a Plea Bargain?
When individuals are aware of who they are, where they are, and what is currently happening in their environment, this is called [BLANK].
