What two types of pollution did we discuss in lab on Tuesday?

Air Pollution

Water Pollution

100

What were the three stations we completed?

Macroinvertebrate Collection

Chemical Tests

Nature Walk

100

Name three impermeable surfaces.

Rocks, Roofs, Pavement, People, Cars, etc.

100

What is Friday's presentation on?

The Park River Watershed!

100

Where did Miss Cyr go to high school?

200

How does smoke affect the pH of air?

Smoke makes the air more acidic therefore lowering the pH.

200

Name the six chemical tests we performed.

pH, nitrate, phosphate, dissolved oxygen, coliform, turbidy

200

What is the difference between the saturated and the unsaturated zone?

The saturated zone is completely filled with water (all of the spaces are full), while the unsaturated zone has water, there is still space left for more.

200

Name three of the six carbon sinks we have discussed.

Forests, Animals, Rocks, Atmosphere, Fossil Fuels, Oceans

200

What is Mr. G's Major?

Chemistry

300

Name two ways algae blooms are detrimental to an ecosystem?

Block sunlight, Lower oxygen levels, Some produce toxins, and other acceptable answers.

300

What does the coliform test measure?

If there are coliform bacteria from feces in the water

300

Describe what an aquifer is?

An underground body of permeable rocks or sediments that are saturated with groundwater and can be brought to the surface by a well or spring.

300

Why does tap water not have an exact pH of 7?

Tap water contains dissolved minerals and gases.

Treatment facilities keep the water slightly basic in order to protect piping, as acidic water can break the pipes down.

Match the college to the correct teacher

Ms. Rivera,      Mr. G,        Ms. Cyr

NYU           Tufts            MIT

Uconn      Capital Community College   Trinity

Coast Guard            Wheaton          Harvard

Ms. Rivera                        Trinity

Mr. G.                              Wheaton

Ms. Cyr                            Trinity

400

Briefly describe what a "dead zone" is.

Any and all acceptable answers.

400

Would Beachland or Spicebush benefit more from pervious concrete? Include a brief explanation.

Beachland, because there is more pavement there which causes increased levels of runoff.

400

Why is the pollution of an aquifer more harmful than that of a small surface pond?

We use aquifers for drinking water, household use, and farming.

The water in an aquifer can travel, therefore pollution can travel as well.

400

What is bromothymol blue?

A chemical indicator that is blue in basic solutions, green in neutral solutions, and yellow in acidic solutions.

400

How old is Miss Rivera?

17

500

We talked about three "Solutions to Pollution" name one, and how it functions.

Rain Garden

Roof Gardens

Pervious concrete

500

What is the importance of the macroinvertebrate collection?

Macroinvertebrates are indicator species that can help us determine the health of a water body.

500

How does permeability affect the recharge of an aquifer?

The more permeable the quicker the aquifer can recharge, and vice versa.

500

What are the inputs and outputs of photosynthesis?

Water + Carbon Dioxide + Energy (sunlight) -> Oxygen + Sugars

500
