What is stress?
A series of mental and physiological responses and adaptations to a real or perceived threat to one's well-being.
What are fixed expenses?
Expenses that are constant and have little change month to month (Rent, cable, car insurance)
What is sleep deprivation?
A condition that occurs when sleep is insufficient
What is hunger?
Physiological impulse to seek food (energy and nutrients that our body needs)
What is the Dietary Recommended Intake (DRI) for water for both men and woman each day?
women is approx. 9 cups of water and is about 13 cups for men.
What are the 3 stages of the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
Alarm Phase, Resistance Phase, Exhaustion Phase
What is debt?
Money owed for goods and services that have been purchased - condition of owing money
Sleep serves two biological purposes, what are they?
Conserves body energy, restores you both physically and mentally
What are essential nutrients?
The body cannot synthesize or produce naturally, must obtain them from our diet
Protein, carbs, fat
Water, minerals, vitamins
When epinephrine is released during the alarm phase, what reactions occur within the body? (name at least 3 things)
stimulates body systems in response to stress, causes more blood to be pumped with each beat of the heart, dilates the airways to increase oxygen intake, increases breathing rate, stimulates the liver to release more glucose, dilates the pupils to increase visual sensitivity.
What is credit?
The ability to buy goods and services in advance of paying for them
What period of sleep does dreaming occur?
What does this period of sleep stand for?
REM - Rapid Eye movement, brain wave activity similar to that seen in wakefulness in which rapid eye movement and dreaming occur
What are the functions of water in the body?
Aids in fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance, helps regulate body temperature, carries oxygen, nutrients and hormones (primary component of blood and lymph) and removes metabolic wastes.
What are 4 sleep disorders?
Insomnia, Sleep Apnea, Restless Leg Syndrome, Narcolepsy
How has chronic stress been linked to cardiovascular disease?
Chronic stress can increase arterial plaque buildup due to elevated cholesterol, harderning of the arteries, increases in inflammatory responses to the body altercations in heart rhythms, increased and fluctuating blood pressures.
What is a credit score?
What is a 'good' standing credit score?
- Numerical measure of an individual's creditworthiness
- 700 - 800
What is the percentage you spend in non-REM and REM sleep during a sleep cycle?
non-REM 75%, REM 25%
What is hyponatremia?
Excessive water intake, low blood levels of the mineral sodium. Sodium is essential for the transmission of nerve impulses, sodium in the fluid outside of cells balances potassium in the fluid inside of the cells to keep cells properly hydrated. When the level of sodium in the bloodstream and tissue spaces is excessively diluted, water flows into cells, which swell (potentially fatal swelling of the brain and other tissues)
What is sleep dept?
What is the role of the sympathetic nervous system during the fight or flight response?
Responsible for stress arousal. Energizes the body for fight or flight by signaling the release of several key hormones.
When making a budget, what are at least 3 things you should do?
There are 5 different stages of sleep. During what stage does the brain produce theta waves?
Stage 1 - lightest sleep
What is the function of High-Density Lipoproteins?
high density because their high protein content makes these compounds more dense than other LPs. HDLS are produced in the liver and circulate in the bloodstream, picking up cholesterol and transporting it back to the liver for recycling excretion. Cholesterol removed from the blood stream cannot collect in, and damage, the blood vessel lining. A high-level of HDL reduces and individuals risk for the bloody vessel damage that can lead to CVD.
What are 3 internal factors that can affect your stress response?
