The type of nonlinear plot that includes two or more separate narratives linked by a common character, event, or theme; it is used often in this book.
What is parallel plot?
Citra does this to escape Xenocrates and the Blade Guard in 'Scythe', but is unafraid of the consequences of this because she can be revived in a revival center.
What is jumping off a building? ("Splatting" is acceptable too because it is the term used in the story)
The scythe name Citra took on after she was ordained in "Scythe".
Who is Scythe Anastasia?
An island stated in a nursery rhyme that was said to contain a "failsafe" for the Scythedom, sought after by Scythe Faraday in "Thunderhead" and "The Toll".
What is the Land of Nod?
Rowan's best friend who met his untimely demise in "Thunderhead".
Who is Tyger Salazar?
The frequency of changing perspectives throughout the book.
What is all the time?
The term used to describe the act of a scythe ending one's life. It is shown often throughout the trilogy and supports the theme by showing that once it happens to you, you cannot value your life anymore when you are dead.
What is gleaning?
High Blade of MidMerica in 'Scythe'. Promoted to a Grandslayer in 'Thunderhead', meeting his untimely demise only days after.
Who is [High Blade/Grandslayer] Xenocrates?
The artificial intelligence present throughout the trilogy. It is a deuteragonist and the sole ruler of the world, but is not evil in any way. It has interacted with almost every protagonist and deuteragonist in the trilogy and has provided either information or motivation to each one.
What is the Thunderhead?
Captain of the Spence, the ship that found Citra and Rowan in Endura's vault in "The Toll". They were raised in the Charter Region of Madagascar, showing gender fluidity.
Who is Jerico Soberanis?
The main setting of the trilogy and it supports the plot because the place has a conflicting Scythedom and causes many events, especially early on.
What is MidMerica?
A place that revives people who were rendered "deadish". Used throughout the trilogy and plays a key role in the theme.
What are revival centers?
The Scythe Commandment that states "Thou shalt claim no earthly possessions, save thy robes, ring, and journal."
What is the Eighth [Scythe] Commandment?
Scythe Goddard redefined this to allow him and his associates to glean more of a different kind of people without breaking the law in "The Toll".
What is the definition of bias?
Former night librarian at the Great Library of Alexandria and acquaintance/partner of Scythe Faraday in finding the Land of Nod.
Who is Munira Atrushi?
This term is used to describe people who worship many abnormal things and occurrences, some of which actually happened (similar to a present-day religion). They contribute to the plot because of the actions by some notable ones throughout the trilogy.
Who/What are Tonists?
The main theme in the trilogy, especially in "Scythe".
What is valuing your life? (Anything along the lines of this works too)
The name the Thunderhead gave Citra when she asked who killed Faraday.
Who is Gerald Van Der Gans?
The former associate of Scythe Goddard. She stabbed him in the heart at the end of 'The Toll', ending him for the second and last time.
Who is Scythe [Ayn] Rand?
The star quarterback at Rowan's school, gleaned in "Scythe" and is one of the first gleanings described in the trilogy.
Who is Kohl Whitlock?
This term is used to describe people who have broken the law minorly and are under surveillance and rehabilitation by the Thunderhead. They contribute to the plot because of the actions by some notable ones, primarily in 'Thunderhead' and 'The Toll'.
