What is taurine, where is it found, and why is it important for cats?

Taurine is an essential amino acid that a cat can only ingest by eating animal products since the amino acid is solely available through animal proteins. Unlike other mammals, felines are incapable of creating their own taurine through pre-existing amino acids within themselves. Taurine works to keep a cat's vision running smoothly and sharply. If your cat is lacking sufficient levels of taurine, this can lead to both vision loss and feline central degeneration. Furthermore, heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathy are both two very serious dangers that are associated with lack of taurine.

Explain a small animal bedding change: what I will need, how often to do it, and why it's important for my animal's health.

Changing bedding should be done at least once every 7-10 days or as needed. If you have a small animal in a big cage then it won’t need to be done as much, but if you have a big animal in a small cage then it will need to be done more frequently.  When you change their bedding make sure you clean the whole cage with a bio-enzymatic cleaner to get rid of all the bad bacteria. Bacteria can sit on the bottom or sides of the cage and grow from these areas. Small animals being so low to the ground are very prone to getting Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).  Routine cleaning of a small animal's environment also reduces the risk of an animal developing respiratory issues from an unsanitary environment. This is also why it is important to choose an extremely low dust bedding.

What is the appropriate way to transition a kitten into a new household that already has another cat living there?

Start off with designating an entire room of your house for your new kitten. This allows him to stay safe, out of trouble, and separate while simultaneously giving his bigger siblings a chance to hear and smell him through the door. By the time your new kitten is accustomed to his new environment and is ready to make the big move shortly, it’s now time to introduce all of the cats together by means of a soft carrier for the kitten. This allows all cats, both young and old, to see and interact with one another without any chance of physical conflict. After several days of this process with positive results, it is then time to let them interact without the carrier and to allow your kitten to enjoy his new home.
