The Pilgrims each were given their own parcel of land to grow crops. Some of the Pilgrims had individual skills like being a cobbler or a blacksmith or a baker. They would trade their skills among the group instead of growing crops. This was called the free-market policy.

Without Squanto, it is doubtful if the Pilgrims would have survived at all. At the end their first year half had died.
