Define Growth Mindset.
Growth mindset: a whole-hearted belief that our intelligence is not fixed. Our intelligence can be grown and developed with practice.
Recite the student attendance policy.
1. Students must log in on the K12 Platform by 9:05 daily.
2. Students must be logged in ON TIME to the live Class Connect/New Row session with their Period 1 teacher.
2. Cameras must be on (with you, visibly in your school uniform), mic muted. If your camera is off, you’ll be marked ABSENT.
4. If you’re not logged in at the beginning of the live P.1 Class Connect/New Row session, you’ll be marked tardy.
5. If you do not log in for live sessions with your teacher, you will be marked absent--even if you log in to K12 and complete your daily assignment!
We have a Block Schedule this year. A classmate asks you what "day" it is and what classes she needs to go to today. You tell her..
A Day: 1, 3, 5
B Day: 2, 4, 6

Who is our Principal?
Mr. Rodriguez!
In your own words, restate the meaning of the class value: Adaptability.
Student responses may vary. We stay current, but are comfortable with not knowing. We see opportunities where others see challenge. We are resourceful and share our learned knowledge. We are flexible and embrace change.
Demonstrate proper student appearance on camera during live class sessions.
Relationships with your classmates matter. Before you say something (potentially mean or hurtful), always ask yourself the “Accountable Speak” questions. What are they?
Is it kind? Is it helpful? Is it necessary? [and most importantly: would I feel comfortable saying this in-person?]
In the Student Guide, there is the following policy: Students should engage appropriately with online tools and capabilities. (Ex: using doodle feature APPROPRIATELY!)
Propose an additional solution to help student artists use their talents in a productive manner (meaning, NOT graffiting/doodling on powerpionts!!).
Student answers will vary. Teacher discretion.
Pretend we're playing Charades and you are our school mascot. GO!
*Anything that resembles a warrior is acceptable*
Predict what would happen if, we did not ground our behavior in the Classroom Value of Diversity?
Student responses may vary. Diversity: We are proud of our personal stories. Our identities are worth studying, teaching, and celebrating. We are open and receptive to learning about each other.
Predict: If you've just returned to class after having been absent, what should you do FIRST?
If you've been absent, it is your responsibility to review K12 and make-up any outstanding assignments you have.
Until the platform is working again, check our Microsoft Team Room. If there's nothing there, contact me. You have the number of classes that you were absent to make up the work.
This class will utilize Restorative Justice Practices to build relationships and resolve conflict. Propose an issue that could be resolved using a class circle (a structured discussion that provides an opportunity for us as a group to talk through an issue).
Student responses will vary. The problem can be with me (the teacher), the work, a student, an issue in the school, or a problem in the community. Whatever it is, If there is a problem in class, I promise to enthusiastically and caringly help you to resolve it, either 1:1 or with the group.
Paraphrase (put in your own words) the Food/Drink/Gum policy: Snacks and water are totally fine, but please do not have a five course meal during live class.
Responses may vary. Additionally, students will keep the following items away from their learning environment: electronics, including cell phones and video games.
A Grade-Level Team Leader is the teacher who hosts parent teacher conferences and plans grade-wide activities. Who is our Grade Level Team Leader?
6th Grade: Ms. Snow (3214)
7th Grade: Ms. R. Williams (3210)
Living into which class value (growth, grit, vulnerability, or diversity), would help you solve the following problem: You are stuck on a word and need help figuring out its meaning.
Vulnerability: We are not afraid to ask to help when we need it. We advocate for ourselves and support each other.
Explain: Why is important to complete your work with academic honesty?
Academic Honesty: I take cheating seriously. In college, cheating can result in expulsion. The same goes for middle school. All work you turn in must be yours and yours only. The MINIMUM consequence for academic dishonesty is a 0 in the gradebook and a call home. If you’re struggling with an assignment, I will always help you.
This is the learning strategy in which small teams work together on activities to improve learning. Name the strategy and describe when you might use it.
Student responses may vary. Use your assigned study partner(s)! Connect during or after class to work together and complete your assignments on time.
Imagine students did not follow the live class expectations (mics muted when not talking, cameras on with you visible!). What potential issues would this pose?
Student responses will vary.
Name the educational platform we are using this year (once it's back up & running). Name the 2 platforms this class is using until that platform is working again.

Backups: Microsoft Teams, Zoom

Demonstrate the virtual bathroom policy.
If you need to step away from your computer (for a quick bathroom break) during a Class Connect session, write to me privately in the chat. Then, turn off your camera before you stand up and step away. Immediately turn it back on once you’re in your seat.
How does this guidepost (take care of each other) relate to our class theme?
In ELA, our ultimate concern is to become effective communicators, critical thinkers, and advocates. We are not only here to improve the individual; we are also here to change the collective. We commit to utilizing the skills that we develop in English class to bettering our community. Taking care of each other relates to this "ultimate concern" because it requires us to practice working together and communicating our ideas with one another now, so that we can fulfill this goal.
This year, we have an unprecedented access to the internet. Respect online privacy, including your own. Do not post personal information in a public forum. Be careful and know who you are chatting with online. Ask yourself the "grandma rule"--would you feel comfortable with your grandma seeing your post or picture?
What was our school motto LAST year 2019-2020?
Dream it! Believe it! Achieve it!
