About 5,000 years ago, in ancient Egypt, pyramids were built as tombs for Egyptian rulers, called pharaohs. The first pyramid was called the Step Pyramid. The pyramids were huge and had lots of rooms inside like store rooms, bedrooms, a temple, and even courtyards. They were also beautifully decorated. On the inside walls were messages, stories, and prayers in a picture writing called hieroglyphics. The walls were also painted with false doors which were thought to be connectors between the living and the dead. Pyramids were very expensive to create and took many years to build. While they were being built, cities sprung up at the base of the pyramids in order to provide food and shelter for the pyramid workers and their families. When construction was over, the workers left, but guards stayed behind to protect the pyramid from thieves. All ancient Egyptians believed that whatever you were buried with would be taken with you and enjoyed in the afterlife. So, pharaohs stored all of their gold and treasures inside the pyramid where they were buried. Although traps and secret passages were built into the pyramids to discourage theft, it was still very tempting to robbers. No one knows for sure why but by 1550 BC the Egyptians stopped building them.

What is the main idea of this passage? Also, what is one supporting detail (one detail that supports the main idea)?

The main idea of this passage is the history of the pyramids.

One supporting detail is that the pyramids were built as tombs for pharaohs 5,000 years ago in Egypt.
