The airlift started because the Soviet Union blocked roads into Western Berlin.

 The allies used airplanes to fly supplies into Western Berlin for a year. 

Joseph Stalin eventually ended the Blockade but then built the Berlin Wall separating Eastern Berlin from the allied controlled West Berlin.

 If people in Eastern Berlin tried to escape they would be shot. 

The wall was torn down in 1989 and symbolized the end of the Cold War.
