This is a major support for Deaf/hard-of-hearing users for videos that contain audio. It also benefits other users like English as a second language learners and those with attention barriers.
What are Captions and/or a Transcript?
In most cases, users who cannot use a mouse rely on this device for digital navigation.
What is a keyboard?
True or False?
Using the acronym SLCC as a replacement for Salt Lake Community College is accessible to all users as long as the college logo appears in the same document/webpage.
False.
Logos are visually helpful but users who have barriers with identifying images of text/images may not have enough context to know SLCC stands for Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) unless it is defined in text, or the logo has alt text and is first in the reading order.
True or False?
A Word document with the default heading (Heading 1, heading 2, etc.) and list styles will carry those features over to a PDF if exported or saved as a .pdf
True.
The title style will not carry over, but default numbered heading styles, lists, tables (with the proper mark ups), images, & alt text will carry over most of the time. (best to use the save as .pdf in Word instead of the Acrobat plugin export)
When this concept is restricted/unsupported, a person cannot use a provided resource.
What is Access or Accessibility?
This is one of the most important structures for your documents, it often has multiple levels and introduces a subject or main idea.
What are Headings?
This is a formatting tool for text that is in every text editing software (Word, PPT, Canvas pages, etc.). It helps create an ordered structure.
What is a ordered/numbered list?
In a fillable form, a user can add this to provide screen reader users detailed instructions on what to add into the form field.
What is a Tooltip or Alternative Text Description?
True or False?
If a template for a Word document or PowerPoint has been remediated for WCAG compliance, all content added to the template is WCAG compliant by default.
False.
The structure and default layout/elements may be accessible, but will likely be disrupted by added content that isn't controlled by the template.
Images added without alt text, videos without captions, adjustments to text or background color/font, etc.
The Americans with Disabilities Act Title II rule change applies this set of guidelines to relevant content of which compliance is required by April 24th, 2026 for SLCC.
What is WCAG?
Double Jeopardy: What version and to what level?
I can use this tool to check the contrast of color between text and its background.
What is a Contrast Checker?
True or False?
All digital content is operable with a keyboard.
False.
Not all webpages, documents, & software have keyboard-only functions for every feature unless intentionally programmed/incorporated.
Double Jeopardy: What does it mean to be operable with a keyboard? (definition or example)
Making sure all heading level 2 text is visually the same is an example of this concept.
What is Consistency/Predictability?
True or False?
Content that is accessible cannot be complex or have visually complicated design elements, since those qualities contradict a simple, predictable structure.
False.
There are tons of supports for accessible complex and visually focused media, such as alt text, long descriptions, audio descriptions, vectorized graphics, web supports in HTML, and accessible math like MathML and MathJax. Apps like inDesign, PPT, and PDFs have accessibility features to provide a better experience for non-visual users, if implemented.
True or False?
A screenshot of a table in a PPT presentation is accessible as long as the image is clear/simple enough to read visually and there is accurate alt text that captures all of the information in the table.
False.
Navigating a table visually is the main method of understanding. Without associated headings and a determinable structure that is predictable, screen reader users have to depend on alt text or a description which isn't the same as seeing all of the information available in a data matrix.
The image above is an example of this; it is inaccessible to screen reader users and can be difficult to read for low vision users.
What is an Image of Text?
True or False?
As long as a link works (goes to the intended webpage), it is accessible to all users.
False.
Descriptive links provide a links purpose or exact location, and avoids phrases like "Click here" or "Webpage." Some examples would be the "SLCC Home page" or "Course Module 3."
Instructions for a resource should avoid relying on only this visual cue.
What is Color?
Doing this action can disrupt the accessibility of a document after it has been remediated.
What is Editing?
This framework uses studied psychology of learning to provide better modalities and structures for students to learn content in ways that align with how they prefer to think/express knowledge.
What is Universal Design for Learning (UDL)?
Double Jeopardy: Who developed this framework?
This support can help users understand a graph like the above in tandem with alt text.
What is a Long Description?
Double Jeopardy: What major accessibility issue is present with the graph's trend lines?
Flashing content that is present in a video can trigger this in a person with epilepsy.
What is a seizure?
Breaking a long process into smaller sections helps reduce this concept.
What is Cognitive Load?
Screen readers and other assistive technology read this coding language natively to provide meaning to the user.
What is HTML?
True or False?
Not all screen reader users are blind/low vision.
True, only 77% of surveyed users had visual barriers, other users include ESL, those who have ADHD or TBIs that affect focus and attention.
