Pi goes through many types of loss including, loss of family and friends and loss of innocence. Examples from the book include: family dying on the sinking ship, animals getting eating, having to fend for himself and having to eat meat.

Loss of power is the main type of loss in the novel, but loss of a loved one is also evident in the play. Prospero is stripped of his title as Duke of Milan. Antonio is later stripped as Duke of Milan as well. Alonso mourns for the loss of his son, even though he turns out to still be alive.

John Proctor loses his pride and dignity when he has to tell the court about his affair. Abigail loses her innocence when she does whatever she can to get John Proctor to like her again. Danforth loses his sense a justice when he would rather people be put to death then have people realize that witches are not real and he was wrong.
