1. The suit was filed to desegregate public schools in Knoxville, TN.

1. In 1619 a Dutch ship brought 20 enslaved Africans ashore to the British colony of Jamestown, Virginia thus beginning the use of Black slaves as opposed to indentured European servants.
2. An estimated 4 to 5 million enslaved people were brought to the New World during the 18th century alone.
3. In 1808, Congress outlawed the import of newly enslaved people however over the next 50 years the slave population nearly tripled.
