What is through taking advantage of resources. Jamal seeks the help of neighbor and author William Forrester in order to help improve his writing abilities and prove his worth at his new school. Jamal does not give up hope once he is discouraged by his teacher, instead he tries harder to prove him wrong and does not allow one harsh critic to stop him from pursuing his dream of being a writer.

What is hard work. Jamal persistently sought out help from William Forrester to improve upon his writing. This constant practice and work exemplifies the American Dream because although Jamal came from a poor area in a sub-par school district, he was able to attend an elite private school and go on to receive college offers. The American Dream is exactly this, to work hard to become successful, no matter what one's background is.

What is through obtaining an education. Frederick Douglass’ goal was to become a free man, and he knew that the key to freedom was knowledge. Douglass took every opportunity possible to improve his reading, including finding newspapers, dictionaries, and even bribing young white children with food in order for them to teach him a few words. Douglass’ thirst for knowledge led to his eventual freedom.

What is through perseverance. Douglass faced many obstacles, including the institution of slavery. But he defied the rules of slavery and earned an education to free himself. He persevered through not only physical pain, but also mental as he had to overcome the horrors of slavery to eventually obtain his dream, the American Dream, of freedom.

What is through taking risks. Washington took many risks by working in the mines to make money as well as through walking miles to the Hampton Institute. He also took a risk by agreeing to become principal of the school in Tuskegee, which wound up being the largest accomplishment of his life. If Washington had let his economic situation stand in the way of his desire for education, he would never have accomplished his goals.

He worked his entire life to become the man in the public eye that he knew he could be to establish himself as a figure of education, and therefore, success.

What is Douglass’ drive to accomplish anything he wanted. On multiple occasions, Douglass did not let anything stop him from achieving his goals. One of Douglass’ first goals was to get an education. After being denied of an education by Mrs. Auld, Douglass was able to learn how to read by bribing other children to teach him. Another time Douglass was able to overcome barriers in the way of his goals was his escape from the horrors of slavery. Freedom was the main goal in Douglass’ life, and he was not going to let anything, like slavery, get in the way of achieving it. His drive to overcome all the barriers in his life sets him apart from the rest of society.
