Born in San Pedro, California, she was an American civil rights activist.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, her father, just out of surgery, was arrested and detained in a hospital. “He was the only Japanese in that hospital,” Kochiyama recalls, “so they hung a sheet around him that said, ‘Prisoner of War.’” He died shortly thereafter.

FDR signed Executive Order 9066 in 1941, causing 110,000 Japanese people in the US (primarily US citizens) to be held in 10 concentration camps.

Influenced by her and her family's experience being held in a camp and her deep friendship with with Malcolm X, she advocated for many causes, including the anti-war movement and reparations for Japanese-American internees.

As founder of Asian Americans for Action, she also sought to build a more political Asian American movement that would link itself to the struggle for Black liberation.
