Which number is an example of bullying?
1. Rose is on a basketball team with her friends. During practice, players can pick a skill to work on. Rose and her friends do not want to work on the same skill. Rose practices dribbling while her two friends practice shooting the ball. After practice they walk home together.
2. Ernie is the shortest person on his basketball team. It started with two of his teammates (which are the captains) laughing and calling him "shorty". Ernie has heard them say he isn't good. His friends on the team have also stayed near the two teammates during practice because they were told that the ball wouldn't be passed to them if they were Ernie's friend.
2 is an example of verbal (saying "shorty") and social (telling friends to not be Ernie's friend) bullying. There is an imbalance of power by the amount of teammates bullying (2) and their status (captains of the team). Bullying is repeated by the different types of behavior (calling names, exclusion).
