Born at the beginning of the 20th century, Ernest "Ernie" Pyle was an American journalist who came to define the term "war correspondent." As a traveling reporter and columnist for a chain of over 300 newspapers he was also a precursor of today's syndicated columnist. His articles on the everyday life of soldiers in combat zones during both World Wars, earned him tremendous popularity and he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1944. He died from Japanese machine gun fire in 1945 while reporting on the war in the Pacific toward the end of World War II.
