This family was the nearest neighbor to pioneer settle Peter Kehley  back in the day.  Its twins were the first children born in Shenandoah.  It also is a family famous for its business in selling tombstones.

Before Boyers, there was the A & P... they had you grind your own 8 o'clock coffee beans.  This was their store brand that people considered buying rather than the higher priced national brand of canned goods  (Remember you are at the A & P) 

What is Ann Page Brand?

This drug store, at 38 S. Jardin, was in operation at least from 1915 through 1931.  It shared its name with a popular Bar up the Heights.

The very Greek, Jimmy Gecas and his wife Angeline, ran this establishment which is still in operation.

He ran an operation that sold newspaper, candies, and tobacco procutes on the first block of E. Center. His first name was Frances and he went by a shortend version of this, his full last name.  He was struck by a hit and run vehicle while crossing Center Street and was killed.

Ditchies'  _____________ was actually the first operation here on the site of our GSAHS Museum ato 201 S. Main.  It preceded Aranoff's Wholesale. 

What is a theater.?  It is listed historically as one of the first 7 theaters to operate in Shenandoah.

Our local supermarkets provided stamps and change along with your reciept after you paid for your order.  Name the two types of Savings Stamps you could lick and stick into your books for later prize redemption.

What are S & H Green Stamps and King Corn Stamps?  

Thomas Sperry of Cranford and Shelley Byron Hutchinson of Ypsilanti, Michigan.   The letter S was for Sperry and the H for Hutchinson.  Gotta love a guy who hails from Ypsilanti.

Fred and Marion sold "patent" medicines from this long tenured Main Street establishment since at least 1921.  They also dealt in many notions and potions as did the drug stores of their time.

Upon Fred Smith's death, the shocking wealth of his estate was revealed and it was able to establish annual major local scholarships.

People enjoyed late night fries with gravy served up at the restaurant run by the family of Al and his wife Florence nee Wiekrykas and their kids Roy, Mary, and Ann... and young Albert who never really matured.

As early as 1890, the Hookies ran a swimming hole up on the side of Locust Mountain.  This family is better know for operating a swimming pool up on the face of Locust Mountain underneath the current Heights.

All of the following brands were sold in our supermarkets:  Dreft, Oxydol, Octogon,  Rinso, and Gold Dust.  It is here that our housewives used these branded products.

A. H. Abeloff ran his operation from 108 W. Coal Street from at least 1941 through 1971.  This, the name of his Pharmacy was wonderful for primacy in the phone book listings of the day.

Seems everyone in town enjoyed crabcakes at Kitty's.  Kitty continued the business after the death of her husband who ran the place under his name as Stanley's.  This was the last name of these cafe owners.  

What is Tobias?  

Kitty was originally a Yesensky. 

Her  popular sister was Betty Yesensky Bartnicki. 

Take out was wrapped in newspaper.

Kids at the end of shopping enjoyed the checkout lines and often prompted their parents into buying a final treat of small little candy pellets that were dispensed just under the flipped up head of cartoonish figures... name that neatly marketed candy.

Kirwin's Drug store at Main and Center later transforms to Jones Drug Store from the turn of the 1900's through at least 1935.  Bacause of its prime location and long hours, it also cooperated with a few other local establishments with more limited hours to offer these for sale.

If you needed to be Quarentined back in the olden days, you were sent to the "Pest House" shortened from the word for "Pestilence." The Pest House was located in this general area. 

What is Up the hill as you left town via E. Center on the way to Mahanoy City?  It was up from the Columbia Grove and Trotting Park.
