Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. This proclamation declared that all enslaved people in Confederate states were to be freed. However, it took more than two years for the news to reach Texas, where approximately 250,000 enslaved individuals remained unaware of their freedom until Union General Gordon Granger announced it on June 19, 1865.
